Hi Derek,

Not exactly the same I change from Ford crossflow to ST170, have a look through some of my posts.

out of interest as i'm thinking of an engine swap at some point soon... The ecu seems to be the sticking point for me as they are expensive and you ideally need it rolling roaded which adds another couple of hundred. Is there a reason you could take a working car and cut the orginal wiring loom back and remove bits that aren't needed. If you did it in sections and checked the car still ran then eventually you'd be left with an ecu. You'd probably have to leave some bits wired together like door locks and leave a key connected for the imobiliser which could be a useful addition.

It obviously won't be tunable but you know it would run well from the start without RR or loads of tinkering.

Is that do-able?

Further bit of info. Pre 94 the ECU didn't have immobiliser so key and barrel not needed. Talking zetecs here. ST far more complicated and in my opinion its a bit of a disappointing engine. Much easier to go with a blacktop.

The ST is far from a disappointing engine and that's talking from experience. I've done both, the ST is far better than the blacktop a much stronger engine for a start. On Throttle bodies I was hitting 194bhp with variable valve timing.

I've done both too and still run the ST. I'm getting a tiny bit more from the ST. Perhaps because I fitted the ST in 2009 and its been a long hard road to discover how to get it to work. A blacktop was always an easier option but I chose the difficult one. N/A 100bhp per litre is not that impressive with all the potential advantages of VVT.
