Engine Mounts

Hi all, does anybody have any details as to what engine mounting arms and rubbers are fitted to a pinto in a 1998 3a. My engine does a very good impression of a jelly even when moved by hand and this causes it to lurch around the engine bay.

The alternator then hits the steering bar when driven hard and its starting to anoy me. I've got a pair of mounts from Burtons for an Escort Mk3 which are the right sort just a little too small for the mounting points, anybody shed any light on any competition mounts available and what they are for ie model of car. I'll include photos later.

Griff. i know the feeling well regarding the clearence between the steering, alternator and the exhuast on the 3A. I binned the original sierra Mounts which are oil filled and sloppy and replaced them with a pair out of a XR4i, i think they are the same as the cosworth type!. Are yours the type with a bottom plate with two slotted holes that pick up the studs on the monting box (XR4I Type) or the hour glass type that require a mick mouse bracket to hold them in place.

The XR4I type are about 12/15mm shorter but i had some profiled plates made (1 under the mount and 1 under the arm giving me 10mm extra hieght.

Can try and dig some pics out if required

XR4 type by the sounds of it. I'm going back into Burtons tomorrow with one of mine to try and sort it out before my next track day.

Hi griff, I will be interested to hear how you get on as these mounts are a frequent topic subject, An alternative to these would be good news to a lot of owners, Helen,s exmo also has this type fitted.

Sorted :D :D :D

The engine mount is indeed from an XR4 / Cosworth, the mount raises the engine about 10mm from the existing soft one and is rock solid compared to the original.

The cloud on this silver lining is the cost :boohoo:

About £140 from Burtons, I managed a small discount when tears started to roll.

I will take photos later and include new and old setups

PS if you want any collecting for the Herts area I'm in the area of Burtons quite often saving P&P at least.

My Exmo was criticised by my MOT garage as having a 'mobile' engine with unusual sideways movement. The man said it was not enough to fail it, and added that he had never come across a Sierra with the same problem.

So am I right in saying that, according to experience of others in RHOCAR, this is a design fault and not just old age?

Couple of years ago I bought some new mounts, the big jelly ones and it made no difference to my engine wobbling. Main trouble this causes me is clutch judder with such a poorly located engine.

I have noticed that some Pintos have shock absorber engine stabilisers mounted in such away as to locate the engine, would this be a solution?

I don't think the mounts you have shown are standard fitment for a XR4 or cossie, they look quite similar to mounts made by a company called vibratechnics, if so they mount the engine really solidly (At the expense of much more vibration - read like being at a dentists). The last set of cossie/XR4 mounts I bought from ford for my 3a looked identical the the mount you replaced and cost circa £100 for the pair.

Thanks

You are correct with the manufacturer, they are uprated mounts for XR4 / Cossie use.
