Age related registration, donor car and V5

Hi All,

I've removed the engine and gearbox from my donor car so I can get an age related number plate.  I've taken lots of photos and videos as evidence.

I don't expect to finish the kit build for several years and I don't want the donor car sat around that long.

Will I need the original V5 when registering the kit car ?

If I scrap the donor car does the V5 have to be handed over ?

Any advice greatly appreciated

The answer to your second question is yes, if you scrap a vehicle the V5 must be handed in at the ATF (Authorized Treatment Facility) you only keep the yellow part of the V5 as for a sale or transfer. This is all covered in the official documentation at https://www.gov.uk/scrapped-and-written-off-vehicles. If a registered vehicle is not scrapped or written off then someone must either pay duty or have a SORN in place. Given this, I can't see how the actual donor V5 can be part of registering a kit car, although of course a photo copy or scan could be retained by you.

One of the questions on registering is how was the rest of the vehicle scrapped so they expect it to be scrapped, you will be fine that's how it's supposed to be done.

One thing to check is that the donor V5 has the correct engine number. It can be corrected whilst the donor exists but could cause problems later if it is wrong due to the donor having had a replacement engine in the past.

Thanks very much for your replies and suggestions everyone.

As always the government guidelines are pretty ambiguous and I don't trust anything verbally from them.  I've now found the government page on vehicle registration which states the V5C must be included with the application...

Vehicle registration: Kit-converted vehicles - GOV.UK

Form V55/4 must be completed using the guidelines.  The form on the government page is just a jpg file which you cannot search.  You have to laugh.  The guide doesn't mention the donor car as far as I can see.

When you scrap the shell if you use a registered dismantler or registered scrap merchant they will ask for the car Reg No, they will mark the vehicle as scrap, however you will retain the V5C which you can send in with your application
