Sump Pan Depth

I am getting just a tad confused with this business of ground clearance under the 2B sump. Can ANYONE throw some light on the solution for me?

I collected my kit in Sept 2002 and haven't so much as turned a bolt in earnest yet. It's all in the planning and prep.

The sierra sump is a bit on the deep side, that is clear. it's made of kit-kat wrapper foil so is simple to cut and weld, but can lead to leak, weld, re-test, leak... scenarios. I'd rather not go that route.

Alloy sump from ye olde humble RS2000 I've heard mooted about. I've got one to hand (and a spare, just in case... ) and gone for the swap. The over-all depth of sump is IDENTICAL to the sierra one!!! No extra ground clearance at all ! Gave up in disgust.

I've since heard a whisper which says Capris had the same engine (2L Pinto) but had a shallower sump pan underneath. I have sourced a capri sump (not too hard, I'm employed as a motor factor... :) ) and I'm holding my breath for it's arrival.

What I'd really appreciate now is for all those Hoodies who have 2L engines (Carb'ed or EFi ) to tag up a reply indicating how they've done it. Have you guys raised the engine? Cut and welded? Fitted the RS sump? Any combination of the above? I'm not after essays or War and Peace, just a quick note and maybe a pic if you can.

What I'm NOT after is How to fit a Turbo, CVH, Diesel  , Cosworth, Vauxhall or Ford Twin Cam or any other type of scenario.

Just keep it straight and to the point.

Cheers

Dale.

Dale the 2ltr sump off a capri is smaller in depth but i would get someone to cut the siera sump down to the depth of the bottom of your bell housing its pointless going less as the g/gox will bottom before the sump. a very good welder wont charge much . i've changed three sumps (full size ) its worth cuting and welding before you build.

How to shorten the Pinto sump This is on the NW site and IMHO is the only way to go and do as it suggests use at least 3mm thick steel for the base. Mine is level with the plough at the front and the g/box at the rear and still gets grounded on a regular basis. Unless you are driving only on good roads you will ground it at some time and ally sumps don’t like it

so far so good chaps, but no, a Renault engine is not good news!

If the sump grounds out no matter what, are we all not running just a shade too close to the floor?

Thoughts....?

Stick with the sump tales for now.

Thanks Mick, but I'd sooner find a sump to fit than weld one together. Just a personal thing but I hate the sound of scraping tarmac. Just sounds too expensive!

imo if you went high enough to get a decent ground clearance with the standard sump it would look a bit strange, and probably not handle aswell

i think someone on here found a sump that didnt need shortening? building a velocity? (sorry forgot your name) could be worth doing a search if you wanted a standard one

Dale,

Why not wait until you've fitted the engine and suspension and see what your dealing with. There's various methods that can be used to gain some extra ground clearance. There are also a number of hoods out there that no probs with a standard sump.

As peter says, the alloy sump bolts up level with the bellhousing, so you won't get any more clearance. The important thing is that you don't have a vertical section of the sump showing at the front of the engine that can catch, make sure it slopes. I'm making a belly plate up to protect my alloy sump ( actually the second sump- see previous post!)

Cheers chaps, Keep this going. I can't see a definite answer forming yet though...

some responses:

Doctor Fox: What on earth are you on about? what's a velocity?

Peter Bell: How did your RS2000 sump end up level with your bell housing? I fitted mine with the old gasket just as a dry trial fit and it's the same depth as the steel one, IE 1 or 2 inches BELOW the bell housing...

Gordon McNab: I've trial fitted the engine and gearbox into the chassis several times and each time the sump sits well below the plough tube which ive got Chocked up at 2 inches clear of the ground.

Charles B: My alloy sump(s) do not sit level with the clutch bell housing. What model RS did you guys get your alloy sumps from? Mine are off Escort Mk2.

Swan Jnr: In Luton there are speed humps EVERYWHERE. A low-slung sump is not a great idea.

As I said, keep the thoughts coming. All info is gratefully recieved as i am of the opinion someone else's mistakes make my learning curve a little straighter.

Cheers guys!

 sorry, a luego velocity is a kit (like rh 2b) and someone on here is building one, and i think they found a short sump of a pinto that didnt need shortening

sorry for the confusion (stil cant remember who it is?)

Some steel sumps are the same depth as the alloy ones...

I just cut and shut....when I am on the road I will check it again...you are worrying far too much...get building :p

Dave

PS You might get your SVA before a certain person :D  :p if you put the battery in the right place ;)
