Try PC World Business web site, www.pcwb.com, I'm sure we don't have them instore (I'll have a look tomorrow) but you might get one on our business site.

I know LaCie make one but I don't know if its Vista ready. Under normal use 400mb is plenty fast enough. You would only need 800mb if you were regularly moving lots of data.

  3. Thought just might be worth asking this question.

anyone out there up to speed on external drives and fire wire 800.

my son recently bought himself an external 750GB external drive for storage of graphics films and games etc.

the drive runs off fire wire 800 but can also run at 400 and from a usb 2 but as i understand it the speed of data is slower.

the problem is that his lap top does not have a firewire 800 port so he needs an adapter (the normal size not express). Whilst have found an 800 card but none that work with Vista!!

does anyone out there know where a firewire 800 card compatable with Vista can be located.

  4. Mine went straight through at Glasgow with a suction cup mirror from Halfords - they are emarked, radiussed, come in a couple of sizes and cost less than a tenner - Sorted!

i used the sierra mirror mounted upside down onto a piece of wood. The wood was then attached via screws through the holes in the bonnet meant for the demisters. This has the added benifit of stiffening up the bonet when you have no screen attached. Edges of wood just rounded off easy!

After SVA just took off and put on the screen. Nb handed over my piece of wood with mirror to another Hoodie who used to get his through SVA.

All you need is the mirror to be fitted dont matter how much you can see (but it can't vibrate). Main thing is that you have side mirrors fitted with the correct line of sight. Mine failed using the RH supplied ones so when retested used motorcycle ones with extended arms which passed fine.

  5. prior to the launch of Vista most pc's were sold with the option of a free upgrade to vista.

I have two lap tops one with vista and one with XP whilst vista has some interesting user features and is good at swithcjing between open applications etc but it basically does the same thing. if you are familiar with XP i would stick with it. My son however has vista and thinks its great. Most universities now recommend that its students run vista as it is compatable with their lan's etc.

I use my pc's for business and a lot of software is not compatable SAGE etc - but is gradually becomming so. in addition if you run Sky antime to download sky movies etc they are still not vista compatable so if you were to upgrade you would have a problem.

As the guy from pc world says you cant now get a new machine without vista so its not a bad system its more to do with the software manufacturers upgrading their software to make sure it vista compatable.

If you check on the internet / box that any software you have installed after purchasing your pc is vista compatable then for a newish machine you should have enough processing speed / memory that you should not notice the difference and could upgrade.

  7. i tried to get one before my sva and indeed ordered one from Mountney but never came.

As i did not expect to pass first time took with no pad but changed to button head fixing bolts. inspector had a look and was happy and passed it as OK.

i know others have had a fail on this point so if you cant get one try Nicko's fix or give it a go without one you might get through.

  8. Sorry to hear that you have some parts missing very frustrating when you are so far away.

as per earlier posts if you speak to Richard he should be willing to help you. Note the fact that its the responsiblility of your supplier not Robin Hood but if you need parts you need parts.

Depending upon what you are short of the forum may be able to suggest alternative part / supplier so try putting up a post of missing items. I am sure that those of us over this side of the pond will offer as much help as we can to get you on the road.

Am not too far away from RHSC so if you want something chasing up would be happy to do so. Send me a PM re missing parts!.

  9. When i had my re test had a different chap. He told me that he had to look over the car in full not just the 'fail' points as it was he who was signing it off as a pass. He did have a general look over the car but in the main looked at the fail points to see if they had all been dealt with. Nb he also told me that sometimes they have visits from the central office who observe the test - if you are unlucky to have your test on one of these days then be prepared for every last thing to be picked up on.

the moral of the storey is that when re booking your test ring and make sure its with the same examiner as he will certainly only look at his list of fail points.
