  1. had a slide like that in a volvo fire engine leading a three appliance convoy to a fire in manchester about ten years ago, certainly focuses your attention when peoples lives are depending on you getting there steve
  2. not sure on the size Jim, but will have a look you. wont be til next week maybe tues or weds steve
  3. Jim we've got a mazda 323 at the station for cutting up,could whip the alty off that for you if you want to try it and in true hoody fashion its free steve
  4. got it done by a neighbour where he works £20 inc stress relieving after so a bargain! steve
  5. river island are also doing a leather flying jacket for £80 go to www.riverisland.com enter the site, click on men, then jackets only thing is they're not taking any orders at the moment so may not be any left when they restart orders
  6. olivier just done a search on google and this is top of the list link think you would be better off with a nice pair of oakleys unless you are going for the california highway patrol/porn star look steve
  7. Lee the fuel is pumped to the connection at the rear end of the fuel rail and returns to the tank from the outlet at the bottom of the pressure regulator at the front end of the fuel rail as for the pipe inlet on the plenum see pic below there are two pipes, one nearest the camera is from the pressure regulator, one just behind it is the brake servo steve ps its been cut and shut to fit under the bonnet but all pipes are as original
  8. thanks for that link nigel, have saved the pic for future reference steve
  9. ok heres the plan, i've bought a vauxhall red top dohc engine that i hope to fit this time next year. this gives me time to find all the bits that will be needed for the conversion. as space is a bit tight on the inlet side i wil be using either injection throttle bodies or bike carbs fitted direct to the head but for an adaptor/manifold plate. if i go injection i'll need some sort of management - maybe megasquirt or similar or could use pre 2003 gsxr carbs and get the jetting sorted out. ignition is another problem, could use an early cav/astra dizzy if i can find one, but this has crossed my mind as an idea: the sierra 1.8 cvh uses a hybrid esc ignition that takes signals from a crank sensor, water temp sensor, manifold pressure sensor, inlet air temp sensor and uses vacuum to advance/retard the ignition - does anyone in the know think this and a coil pack could be used in a wasted spark kind of set up for the ignition or am i barking up the wrong tree? have got a stainless exhaust manifold to cut and shut, will probably get the alloy sump cut, shut and winged by the fella who did my injection manifold. what about having a 10/12 mm adaptor plate made for engine to box with dual bolt patterns and modify clutch arm to fit - any thoughts? will fab up engine mounts to suit myself when at the fitting stage. steve
  10. tim heres a link to a radiator size database that i got off the locost site. i think the sizes are for the matrix only and you have to allow for the top and bottom or side tanks but it will give you an idea of whats about. seem to remember that one of the mercs(190???) had a radiator that wasn't far off the right size and had a built in oil cooler steve
  11. been out there all afternoon taking all the ancillaries off the engine in my daily sierra- the one with the snapped cam belt- ready for the heart transplant on friday hopefully. have got to make some room in the garage as i'm picking up a vauxhall red top dohc engine tomorrow afternoon. the idea is to source all the bits then fit it in the 2B with either bike carbs or injection throttle bodies and some sort of management some time in the next year if all goes well
  12. i got a donkey!!! yes a real donkey. but i will never get to see him, cos he lives in Africa somewhere. he's called Elvis and the missus bought him for me through oxfam and hopefully he will be helping some people less fortunate than we are to survive. good luck Elvis!! got some other stuff and also 9 hours double pay for being in work all day, oh yeah, also had the roads all to myself to blast there and back in the hood. merry christmas steve
  13. just need to be 350mm from the floor as per all other indicators, angles of visibility are relaxed for a lotus 7 style tapering body. steve
  14. polo heater has a built in on/off valve which can be operated by cable as the mini heater is in the mini. if you put a cross over pipe between the flow and return to the heater the water will still circulate by this pipe when you shut the valve, when the valve is open the water flows through both the cross over and the heater steve
  15. peter that looks really good, is the R1 1000cc i was thinking of seperating the carbs and using them almost as direct to head throttle bodies, with a spot of bracketery to stabilise them and allow even throttle opening etc do you think they could give the same sort of power as twin webers when you've got them all set up just had an idea the other day and now it wont go away steve
  16. hey thanks paul, opened the link and saw what i was thinking of staring me in the face. not sure which engine i'm thinking of going with yet, got a few ideas kicking around in my head £220- i'm sure i could do it for less than half that, using part of existing manifold as above and having a word with a tame welder steve
  17. i was thinking about putting something like these onto an engine link just wondered if they could be rejetted to suit the engine the prices for these sort of things is pretty attractive, so long as nobody gets into a bidding frenzy would have to have custom manifold made up, probably using the flange from existing injection manifold thinking of a project for next year steve
  18. just wondering, could you use 4 bike carbs/non injection throttle bodies to fuel your engine and would they act like twin webers or would you need a mappable ecu? steve
  19. i had a new nipple pressed on at the local chandlers with a 20 ton hydraulic press - cost a fiver steve
  20. andy sounds like you need to start swapping parts over to try to eliminate the fault. have got a few bits knocking about, so if you want, pm me and you can borrow what i have in the spares box and if one of the bits cures the problem i'm sure we can come to an agreement. are you coming this way over christmas, as if you are you could colect the parts on your travels steve
  21. saw a review on a gauge very similar to this in car mechanic magazine whilst i was doing some free reading in wh smith the other day. the reviewer seemed to think that you could possibly use it on a car with open suspension by fixing the device to the insde face of the brake disc while wheel is still on and under load said fixing to the disc should give a true reading if the disc was in good condition as the disc is parallel to the wheel rim, hub etc etc steve
  22. the good news is the engine is still available - cheers ECAM, just need to collect and fit, i expected the worst when i bought the belt bloke behind the counter showed me the additional info in his catalogue - note this is an interference engine and belt failure can lead to serious internal damage steve
  23. oh well that was a waste of £6.50 new cam belt fitted and absolutely nothing, engine was spinning really freely on the starter so i dont think theres much compression there, so it would appear it is terminal. time for a heart transplant as i know someone who had a 1.8 cvh cluttering up a corner of his garage, just hope he still has it steve
  24. anybody know if a snapped cambelt on a 1.8 cvh is terminal or is there enough clearance between all the bits to have hopefully got away with it. out chrissie shopping and the engine in my sierra runabout gave up, only doing about 25mph, tried to restart and the starter seemed to be spinning far to freely, had a look under the bonnet and could just see knackered cambelt behind crank pulley- whoops!! steve
