A few quick questions - I've just finished dismantling my donor and gearing up to clean all the parts up tommorrow

1. I intend to scrap whats left this week, i have kept the VIN plate under the bonnet and cut out the chassis number in the drivers footwell, is there anything else i need to keep for identification?

2. How do I know what type of gerabox I have

3, How do I no which Diff I have

The gearbox and Diff may well be marked but Im knackered and cant be bothered to go and look now, hoping someone will tell me so it's clear tomorrow when I start the clean up operation !!!

1. You don’t actually need the bit of chassis but it’s not a bad idea to keep it more important is to keep the V5. Some scrap yards are very reluctant to take a car all be it just a shell without the V5 but whatever you do. Do not give it up and from now on keep it on SORN. But before you scrap the shell make sure you have removed all and I mean all parts that are removable, you can always throw bits away later. All that should go is the shell, doors, bonnet and boot.

2. The type 9 has the reverse next to 1st and the MT75 has it opposite 5th.

3. With luck it will still have its tag on it but if not then it's a case of counting number of turns on the input to complete one turn output.

ok thanks, yes my reverse is top left, then 1st,2nd,3rd,4th & 5th so I have a type 9 - which is good but wish I checked before I bought the donor......lucky !!

yes, only the shell and the bits of the loom I couldnt get at, will be getting a new loom with the kit, I've kept all the connectors though - the only other bits Im scrapping are all the interior and the old break pipes etc

the diff code is on the chassi plate too, so as long as its the original it should be easy to id

There are lots of little clips that are worth putting to one side.

Find and keep the brake flexi clips, sort of square spring clip with U shaped cutout.

I also belive that the steering support can be unbolted and modified to show Mr SVA a compliant steering mounting

Axle codes for fords are: A=3.36 B=3.77 D=3.92 F=3.842 J=4.056 K=3.31 M=3.14 N=4.29 P=3.58 J=3.62 V=3.33 Z=3.59 2=4.27 3=3.62 4=3.82 5=3.26 6=3.12 8=3.56

Look on the vin plate for the small box after Axle. Mine below started out with a D in the box and a 3.92 ratio. It is always possible that the diff has been changed on the donor but unlikely. The diff has an aluminium tag on one of the bolts with a code on it. Post the code up if the tag is still there. If the tag is gone you can take the backplate off the diff. The ratio will be painted on the rim of the big gear and you can also see if a viscous diff is in there.

with steel prices being high at the moment i'd check to see if there is a steel scrap yard that will buy the old shell off you. There is quite a bit of steel in it. We regularly take old bit of scrap iron and steel to a local place and get suprising amounts for it. i got £12 for 2 alloy wheels a couple of years back. We took a gearbox and got almost £30 the other day which we found amusing as we'd only paid £40 for the replacement from a breakers.
