Which Engine?

I have a really nice 2B I bought on Ebay last year and it currently has a 1.8 Pinto with twin 40 webers. It sounds great but drinks like a fish, currently doing about 12-14 mpg with a 12 litre tank! Can't drive past a petrol station without going through a cold sweat!!

I live around the corner from Graham B and after seeing his conversion wanted to look at upgrading my current engine.

So the question is do I spend lots on my current engine OR do I buy a new engine AND which should I go for? I want to get this thing to be super quick.

Budget is up to a grand.

If I could guarantee the performance increase I would keep the current one and just make the additional enhancements but I am tempted to go for something with a turbo. I love the idea of a bike engine but not sure what budget would be needed.

Any idea or help would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't go the bike engine route, the 2B is just a bit too heavy and would need to go on a serious diet. How about the Rover V6, nice and light and quite powerful. You would only need to find a reliable one

The Zetec with Mega Squirt or Bike Carbs is the usual route. That will give you 175bhp + and a pretty rapid car. Budget should be more than enough.

You might like to get your carbs set up in the meantime until you're ready to make the switch. A couple of hundred quid on a rolling road will pay you back in next to no time.

How easy would it to be to go down the zetec/bike carb route? I'm not the most proficient of technicians so would need to outsource quite a bit of it, just thinking of cost

Hi,

if i was going to change my engine i think i'd look at either Ford, rover or toyota.

I'd imagine ford is the easiest to sort as most fo the engines will fit the gearbox without issues (except the duratec i believe), zetecs nice and easy to get hold of.

Rover - always had a thing for the k-series, i know its only small but the 1.4 in the caterham still does 0-60 in 6.5

you'll need a new bellhousing for the type 9 though or some kind of adaptor plate. cheap to get hold of i would think and if you went 1.4 it is £80 a year cheaper in tax.

toyota - heard good things about the 4age engine i think the 1.6 is 130bhp as standard?! not sure how much hassle it is to get it onto a ford box though.

If you want to be different completely get a mazda mx5 engine and box and stick it all in. Not sure if anyone has done that on here yet.

Good luck i'll be interested to hear what you go for and how you get on

So how much extra performance would I get from going to a rolling road then? Any ideas and would it be worth it?

what you're getting now seems really quite low to me, dont know though if you're carb is particularly thirsty but it does seem like its drinking a lot.

on a run my v8 will do about 30-33 quite steady and it probably drops to around with more mixed stuff so fort a 1.8 10-12 seems like there might be some gains to be made by getting it set up.

the various rover forums seem to suggest that head gasket failures can be a problem with original equipment but if repaired with the right (more modoern-uprated bits) can solve the majority of problems.

12 to 14 on a standard 1.8 is pants even with twin 40s

I would suggest a good rolling road set up will give you better fuel consumption which will pay for therollingroadset up

To give you an idea my 2.0 L pinto is tuned a bit with bike carbs (4 x 38mm) and even when nailing it i,m still getting 20+ to the gallon i think its sitting around 35 on normal use. My engine was set up on a dyno and cost me £125 when it went in it would barely run when it came out it was a flying machine

Without the dyno run mine would be still running bad and prob drinking fuel
