Hi Torque Pinto Starter

I would second the advice to check and clean all earths and the positive supply to the starter. Don't assume they are OK because they worked before. Also make sure the ignition is not over advanced. A couple of degrees to much can slow the starter to a crawl.

I had starting problems with mine after tuning, i installed new bigger bat cables and run an extra earth lead from bat to engine. i also bought the largest amp hr bat i could fit in the tray no problems from that day to this.

does it turn over any better if you jump an extra bat on it with jump leads ?

i will check and clean all the connections tomorrow

i think thicker cables might be a good idea, my current cables arent the thickest. gotta be worth a try for forking out for a new starter

i'll also try jumping from another batt

thanks for your help chaps, much appreciated as always

Have you tried starting with the throttle slightly open, this helps with my skimmed Pinto. With my setup it knocks off the Vac advance and stops the early ignition and kick-back.

An alternative to a high torque starter maybe to consider Megajolt or similar as this allows you to bring the advance right down when starting.

there is no vac advance with my set-up. im running twin 40's so its not possible

i have slackened off the distributor and tried running less advance

megajolt is on the list for the next month or so but the spare cash just isnt there at the moment.

im just on with making some thicker cables now and will see if that changes things

many thanks for your helps chaps, hopefully it will save me £££

apologies for turning this wanted ad into a Q&A but ive got a couple more questions

i've made up thicker cables all round. i had 10mm2 and it's now about 15mm2

i've been jumping off my diesel mondeos battery too

it's all made a massive improvement but still isnt quite there.

i've managed to get it to the point where its firing but as soon as i cut the starter motor it dies.

any other ideas? as im about stuck now

Cheers, Steve

if you are running points and ballast resistor the ign live wire is misplaced.

just one possibility

i am running points however i found the problem, a very simple one at that!

spark plugs were gapped wrongly at 0.8mm instead of 0.6mm  easily done though

it does still need an uprated starter though, it now starts - just - when cold, but not a chance when it's hot!

so the hunt goes on

really appreciate your help guys

many more questions to come, im sure!
