Rattling Clutch Fork!

I've just put a new clutch cable on my 4 speed pinto Monocoque. I used one from burton power.

Now after a run out the cable seems to be loosening of and the clutch fork rattles on idle or unless I apply a little pressure on the pedal! Any one ever experienced this? Or know how to stop it. I was thinking of putting nuts both sides of the bell housing. Any help appreciated.

Darren.

sounds like the ratchet is not adjusting up I had same problem with mine then it would not put enough pressure on to change gear, all I did was adjust the ratchet on clutch pedal side with a screwdriver to so called help it adjust hth

Needs adjusting by spacing the outer cable.

Usualy done by pulling the outer at the bellhousing and adjusting the nut, if you run out of adjustment, washers or tube at the pedal box helps

Sounds like an escort style cable and no tensioning, just the two tensioning nuts. The type 3 (20 spline) or type E (23 spline) clutch release bearing expects to be tensioned against the diaphragm fingers. That's how ford designed it. If you adjust the cable further till there is no slack you can get rid of the clatter but the clutch will release over the first half inch of pedal movement. Putting a tensioning spring in the system will sort it, either on the release arm pulling it towards the engine or inline in the cable will cure it. Diagram of my inline tensioner below. Used an old softish valve spring.

As a cheap workaround raising the idle speed to 1000 or even 1200 will also stop the clatter although it does not cure the actual cause of the problem.

Cheers guys. I have adjusted it twice but it has slackens of both times. I like the valve spring idea. I already have the extension tube at the pedal box snapperpaul. Thanks for the help. I'll just keep trying till I get it right.

hi I had exactly the same problem !!!! just happened to speak to chris at burton power about it and they do a spring from a mk1 escort that was standard fit by ford back in the day that fits from the bell housing to the clutch fork for this very reason !!!!! and its like £1.25p or something silly
