Leak

After yesterday's mot pass found a big pool of water under car this morning. I have tracked the drips back to the inside of the wheel which drives the fan where the joint with the water pump is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Deffo new pump required. Bearings and seal change would cost you more in time and money in the end and no guarantee for future failure.

It is possible that worn or even collapsed bearings to allow the fan and shaft to separate from the pump. This damage would cost you at least a new radiator.

Okay.... This is beyond anything I have done before but this is the point of having the car (to learn some basic mechanics and if it goes belly up on the road having a bit of an idea what is going on).

Found the instructions in the Haynes manual. Seems doable (he says).

While you are at it and everything is off, think about replacing the old fan for an electric one.

It's a mod that a lot of people do and might save you some time in the future.

Just a thought.....

Important part on that job is to make sure all mating faces are cleaned well before replacing new pump and gasket.

Easy job so keep your head and don't panic.

stick a new belt on while you are at it, unless it isn't very old.

If you haven't done this before you can generally tell the condition of the belt by flexing it backwards. If it's old you'll see lot of tiny cracks. Even if no cracks look at the sides of the belt and look to see how worn it it.

So far so good. Coolant drained, radiator out, fan off (luckily my father in law had a 32 mill spanner), hub off, alternator restraining strap off and water pump off. Enjoyable evening and looking forward to putting it back together.

Any suggestions on the best thing to use to clean the metal surface?

Any wide bladed scraper that isn't too sharp or it will dig in and damage the face.

Finish off with a fine emery paper followed by a good sealer on the rebuild.

Stand back and take a bow of self satisfaction, you deserve it. :clapping: :clapping:

Haynes manual makes no mention of sealant, only a new gasket which I have. Is sealant required and which would you recommend?

Where do I get the necessary torque for the retaining bolts.

Thanks in advance.
