Rattle only when revved, I understand its not the belt making the noise but wondered if I have play in a pully that could be the reason the belt is not sitting right. However IanS has put my mind at rest that this is normal I just need to find what is making the rattle. Ps I have noticed the fuel hose close to belt and put on my ever increasing list of jobs to do this weekend ! WELL SPOTTED IAN !

After lots more fettling we are getting close to sorting issues mentioned previously, however tonight I had it running and heard a rattle (metallic) from the front of engine unable to locate although I did find some play in water pump that I will replace I noticed cam belt on top pulley sat back but on the pulley bottom left sits forward ? Is this a major concern or some what normal ? Belt was replaced 2 weeks ago ! Is this a sign of play in one of the pulleys that could be the noise I can hear ?

I’m starting to think it is fuel as well I have 2 x inline filters one in the boot straight after tank and one just before carb. They both look clear but neither seem to fill up completely. I’m going to try and blow back into the tank tomorrow guessing there is some debris on pick up. I also have a new fuel pump so will stick that on as well. It is strange how it will rev through sweet standing still though only plays up when you pull off

A bit of a story here so I will give as much info as possible in the hope of finding answers. Car is a Robin Hood 3a 1983 2.0 pinto pretty standard. I have done much work 2 weeks ago went out in the sun it drove perfect and was stunning fun. Went into the garage last week for MOT and couple of minor repairs steering and suspension only. It cut out on the MOT ramp. Struggled to start the following day they got it running but was lumpy on tick over. I went in to them yesterday with a timing light and we set timing to 10BTDC I was very confident in the timing and it ran and ticked over smooth as anything. Let it go cold fired her up first turn of the key no throttle or choke or cranking over required this was a first ! We was 100% confident. A job well done. Left it ticking over revved her up absolutely spot on. Pulled out on to the road and a massive flat spot a chug a bang and limped straight back onto the forecourt it cut out. I fired her back up it chugged into the garage I turned ignition off massive bang and smoke out the top of the carb. Left it a minute fired her up ticking over and reviving beautiful at stand still went to pull off again same scenario !!!! Massive flat spots popping and banging out of both ends. The car has new dizzy and carbs fitted. My question is …. Does this sound timing related ? I was very confident with timing but now massively doubting myself ! Or should we be looking elsewhere to solve. any ideas and feedback from experienced pinto nuts appreciated thanks in advance

After some thought carbon build up and hot spot was most likely easily caused from previous running everything was out when I bought it and it has not had a decent long run for quite a while, decided to borrow a carbon clean machine from work ran it on this for 30 minutes today once round the block ignition off and …….. no run on at all ! It seems to have solved it fingers crossed, going to fill up with decent fuel and take it for a proper drive in a couple of weeks.

So after many months and a fair few quid my car is done ! Well nearly went for a drive today was absolutely awesome ! Pulled up at home turned ignition off it chugged a bit then like a 12 bore shot gun out the exhaust, it has always done this since I bought it, I have replaced carb and set up on gas analyser timing is spot on thanks to RichyB all fuel lines and filters changed new k&N air filter new plugs leads cap and arms in fact it would be easier to list what hasn’t been changed but still this running on issue !!! Any clues or advice greatly received thanks in advance Jim

Quick update i finally got time and weather on my side and took her out on Sunday ran sweet for 10 miles plus not a hint of anything last 5 miles ish a couple of minor coughs still felt very electrical failure but by far the best run out to date, my next thought is put a new dizzy in to eliminate the possibility internal components breaking down its elec ignition so not too expensive and will give me further piece of mind unless anyone has better ideas or insight ?

Great many thanks I will contact them later on

Many thanks to everyone for the help and advise, Saturday I tried again whipped the plugs out and cleaned them up she fired up easily! ran to temp and purred like a kitten. Although I have lost confidence to take it out on a main road, I will wait until I have a friend local with a tow rope who can rescue me if it cuts out when driving, really appreciate the offer of time Tractor however we are away sat - Sat for the half term week. Let me road test it when the weather is good enough over the next few weeks, (it is possible ive accidentally fixed it with recent jobs) If it plays up ill start testing the wiring as Richyb66 suggested if i am still pulling my hair out I might just shout for HELP !

Purchased my first ever kit car in August a 1983 Robin Hood 3a.2.0 pinto I have some mechanical knowledge, so I set about it, new carb and added manual choke, plugs, dizzy cap, rota arm, leads and coil set timing set emissions. She drove an absolute beauty for 4 -5 miles then started cutting out! back in the garage first though was a faulty kill switch so replaced no change some dodgy looking wiring to a relay under steering column replaced car fired up ready for test drive. Just gone to it today and no spark at all. Electrics and wiring are not my strong point I am really running out of ideas. I am thinking maybe the ignition switch in the key barrel could be the issue so thinking of losing it and going to flick and push button start on the dashboard would this be a good idea ? can anyone tell me how to wire this up ? any one got any more clues as to what could be going on I have no confidence in the wiring on this car I do know when it runs it is fantastic and everything I wanted it to be Frustrated newbie Leicestershire area ! I will also mention red light on dashboard full time when kill switch is on, 2 more lights one amber one red glow dim all the time when kill switch on key in ignition and turning makes no difference to any of these lights
