Ken
the rack may not fit your car as the rear hoop is different to a normal 2b ie it is wider so wheel sits lower

If at work all day get AA or RAC out
if you dont have a test meter to check charge.
Or pop out lunch time and get one then a new battery if needed.
then safe drive home in the sun

If the temp sender from the pinto worked can you not fit that into the zetec?
Yes single wire from top of tank is the sender.
The fuel gauge issue should not be related to the engine change, is the tank earthed, is there continuity from sender to gauge, is the float actually moving in the tank seen one jammed against side of tank before. Can you get the sender out to see or jack up one side of car to see if it changes?
+1 for all jet said
Take temp sender from pinto or a new one from Ford they are col coded.

Plugs out will keep them dry as well modern plugs don't like getting wet . Could try turning over with no fuel pump to check oil pre sure , first if plugs hard to get out? Then when oil pressure ok cone the fuel pump prime rail switching ignition on and off a few times. Then go for it.
Big smiles
