  1. Right guys heres an update Fitted a new thermostat and new coolant a few days ago. got hold of a temp probe, and today decided to sort it out water temp at 18 degrees at standstill unstarted. Started engine. rad water temp hardly moved for 5 mins, sat at tickover. gauge started to climb then when gauge at 1/3 the rad temp rapidly rose, showing the thermostat opening. Gauge then went to half way and after a few more mins. Fan cut in at approx 100 degrees Gauge sat still, rad temp went down to approx 90,then fan stopped ,then temp rose to 100 again and fan cut in again. all the while the gauge sat still. Got in it and went for a drive. soon as i started moving gauge went up to 3/4 and above, so i stopped popped the bonnet and checked the temp in the rad, never showed above 90, on the few times i stopped to check it. I even coasted down a long hill ,so engine on tickover ,gauge still went high. So it looks like a faulty gauge or sender, but it only shows a fault when moving. think i may lose it for an after market gauge.best place to buy from?? also heat soak looks like its from a poorly sealed engine bay ..especially near my feet , think its time to bend some metal and sikaflex it in place..mild steel or stainless best.??

  3. About the same time you posted this i was on my way home, swung by maplins and purchased a new multimeter with temp probe. Only 20 quid and gonna try to put it through business.so all good. May have a tinker before work in the morn...i dont do early starts see. see if i can rule this out once and for all...btw with new stat and coolant in it runs hotter still...
  4. Obviously im new to hoods. Got a nice one imo but needed a few jobs sorting. So over the weekend got stuck in. Washers were on a seperate switch instead of the end of the stalk so using the info mark b put up managed to rewire those to work on the stalk. Cleaned the masking tape residue from under the trailing edge of the bonnet,no idea why it had been left there so long. The matching design spare wheel i got cheap when fitted stopped the boot from opening as it was too close to the car So got some stainless threaded rod ,instead of the rusty mild steel one and made a nice new wheel holder. Getting a temp probe today so i can check the actual operating temp of the engine to rule out if its running hot or the gauge says so
  5. Yeah straight forward swap dude. seal gone in it. hopefully see ya there.
  6. If the weather is ok and work goes well ill be there.ill look into a temp probe in the mean time. then i can see what temp the engine actually runs at and what temp the fan cuts in at. It cuts in at over half on the gauge.but obviously that means nothing at the moment.
  7. If work goes well ill pop over.meet some new faces. good weather= 2b.....bad weather =bmw
  8. Cheers for all the comments guys. I do have a feeling the sender ain't matched to the clocks. On further investigation today.it has no stat. So it got one fitted and filled with a good mix of water and anti freeze, seeing as It had none in. Not been for a drive yet. Gonna see if anyone local has a way of measuring the actual temp of the water before I delve deeper Thanks so far.
  9. ill get a new cooler stat in there. may even chuck a pump in for what little they cost. see what happens then ,if not polo rad it is.ill measure up if needed. cheers for the help and advice guys.
  10. Right heres more info. Its a 2.0 pinto 5 speed. with escort clocks. Whilst driving say 30-50 mph the temp will rise and the fan cuts in. It will stay on till the temp drops.which wont happen whilst im on the move. On the gauge it says norm, top to bottom. Its pointing at or above the 'n' If i pull up at traffic lights /junction the gauge will drop to half way in 10 seconds if i park up the fan may run for 3-4 mins . I may be panicking over nothing tbh..but the heat soak to the cockpit is lots ,plus with the fan cutting in a lot makes me worry Plus its my 1st kit so im playing things safe and asking questions.
  11. so what is the best way of making it run cooler then.Or is it fine running at 3/4 all the time.? or would it be better doing something to keep it cooler. Im used to modern stuff ,running bang half way at max.
  12. my 2b has a relatively small radiator on it. and when normal driving it sits at approx 3/4 on the temp gauge. soon as i sit in traffic it drops back down below half.the fan cuts in as it should and helps keep it cool Do you think it could do with a better/thicker radiator?? Where is the best place to get a better radiator,or could i take the one ive got to a local radiator refurb place and get them to add more cores, the ends look big enough to take a thicker core. any advice appreciated.
  13. No longer needed as i have lockable gates now. Needs some w40 as its a bit stiff. Bolt to floor raise it up and lock it for extra security Needs a padlock. £25 posted
  14. According to a google search ,they all say the same. You can put one onto it.But you cant keep or transfer the one thats on. My V5 document says my registration mark is 'non-transferable'. Can I transfer a New Reg onto my vehicle? Yes, in some cases. Although you cannot transfer or retain a non-transferable registration mark, the vehicle can receive a registration mark providing the non-transferable registration mark is not a 'Q' prefix, and providing the vehicle meets the normal conditions of the Sales, Transfer and Retention schemes.
  15. ive got these stalks. and mine dont park neither with a mini motor. mark put up a diagram or sorts the other day. here it is. may be of help
  16. Nice one mark..ill use that info see if i can make my washers work correctly.
