But they look fantastic, have great engines

Apparently the engines are very sensitive to oil levels. i looked at a 156 at a local garage and the salesman told me it had had an engine transplant as the last one had run low on oil and destroyed it, which is a common prob on the alphas as he'd heard of a few others with the same prob.

Alfa worth considering - watch for the cam belt though. Alfa kept changing their minds on how often they should be changed. I had a 156 - cam belt went and big bill. Asked my (specialist) Alfa mechanic how often he would recommend a change and he thought ............... weekly!

What about a Quantum H4? See this one?

Your welcome as a passenger only £5. My dad has a MGTF and sister has a MGF. There nice but I still love my MX5. They handle brill. I'l get my scissors. :D :D :D

some good ideas and I'd quite love an alpha but I could only get a very boring mundane one for anywhere near my budget, would def like one later in life though!

as for the mgtf/mx5 debate, it needs to be an 02 plate and you get a lot more car for 4.5k with a tf than you do with an mx5...

as for which engine, some people might be forgetting that I'm only 20 and now have a minor prang under my belt so I'm comparing the 1.6 115 to the 1.8 135, which seems like a good step up both enginewise and specwise, and I really can't afford to insure the VVC 160 as the 135 is pushing it more than I'd like tbh...

Apparantly they also sorted out better ventilation in the tf (compared to the f) and gave it a better rad too so hopefully that will make things a bit better to live with, apart from the dreaded head gasket problems, you still get a lot of car for your money and I quite like the look of them even if they're not particularly masculine and seen as a bit girly but since when do I care what randomers think? If i wanted to blend into the background I'd get a base model fiesta and would have never had the hood!

Ken, unfortunately I'm working this sunday so won't be able to make it, I hate working weekends! just about to book 4 weeks off for summer which probably isn't going to go down too well so wouldn't like to push things too much, is marc having a go? did you get the insurance sorted out for him?

Alfa don't do boring and Mundane. IIRC even the standard spec 2.0 twin spark is good for 150bhp.

156 is a nice car. Didn't like the gearbox much though & forget the tiptronic, awful thing....

I'm reading a clarkson book at the mo, apparently the MG is not a girly car but it does come in girly colours... his quote not mine.

Apparently you need one in Red or BRG. Black would also be acceptable I think

Hi James Marc is coming with me on Sunday, looks ike I will be taking the MX5 as the 27 is not mapped yet. It drives fine but hesitates when floored. Fired up the N reg MX5 up today for the 1st time since November. Took it out and all is fine. It just keeps going. It's gonna be my Le Mans chariot again as the 27 is far to small and hard for a 1300 mile drive. Upside though I have another 2 trackdays booked. Barkston in May and Langbar on the 21st April. Your welcome.Still trying to find Marc a car. Small hatch around £600 to insure through me.

I quite like the look of the blue, I'd say that looked less girly than the red...

Would that be the girly "homo" blue or the old man's dark blue sir?

Dan

Honestly get what you like. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Clarkson does make another valid point though, you need to consider the knicker elastic snapping value.... Mind you I had an Escort Estate... & an Astramax with a carpeted rear  My first car wasn't too bad though considering......
