Cuts Out

after 25 minutes........fuel.....pumping..........very little to nothing!!

You have clearly identified poor supply when the fault occurs. Solve this problem first.

You say the pump was still working but there was no output. Options?

Fuel can't get into the fuel pick-up. Goo in tank or vacuum or empty tank. Run with a new length of pipe to the pump stuck in a clean can of petrol. Does it still fail? If no then it's one of the preceding problems. Drill the tank cap, clean the tank, fit in tank gauze filter, etc.

If it does fail then the pump may be failing after operating for a period of time. This would be odd for it to recover. Mostly they fail and that's it. They get hot if there is no flow as the fuel cools the pump so a hot pump doesn't necessarily mean it's failed! If it's a facet have you got the spawn of the devil metal bullet filter on it that Facet supply. These behave very strangely sometimes and randomly block then clear again. I may have mentioned this before on the board. Go stand in the naughty corner if you have and then remove it, use a simple 8mm inlet fitting and a cheapo transparent £1 inline filter between the tank and pump.

Lastly there could be some sort of blockage between the pump and the carbs. Unlikely but possible.

Other issues not related to your cutting out.

Forget 'Out of electric'. Yes you have a squeeking alternator. Belt tension, new belt, alternator shaft lubrication or new alternator.

Cam belt. You need to make a careful search for whatever is rubbing on the belt. It would be good also if you can check the cam timing is still set-up OK.

Thanks guys. I think I need t do a few things first. I am going to try Nigel's idea of jerry can of petrol and cut of the tank and see if that works.

Going to change the cam belt as a precaution and have already checked for bolt heads. Have had the sump on and off a good few times so could have been a previous issue as all the bolts clear the belt now and there is nothing in the run that catches anymore.

Going to change the alternator belt cos the noise is bloody awful! And my ears can't cope with it. Just as a side issue I have a belt on it that is a wedge shape and has individual teeth. Got this as it was the right length but after further looking it appears different shape belts are available.

Could it be a block in the carbs themselves? If so how do you get zx6r bike carbs adapt to check?

Thanks again and will keep you all posted.

Normally when the pump is running adjust the regulator until the gauge reads the pressure you want. As long as you have a good flow to the carbs.

Hi all. I am going to do some more testing this evening and bypass the fuel tank.

Just as a second thought, does the fact I have blanked of the vacuum pipe from the dizzy effect anything? All I have done is put a bolt in the end of the tube to blanket of and cable tied it up out the way? Think I know the answer is that it won't make any difference but thought best to check.

Thanks

Update....

Hi all. Been doing some further testing this morning, bloody hot work but better than the day job!

I ran the engine from a fresh jerry can of petrol. Ran as normal and then cut out after 25 minutes. The 25 minutes is the maximum amount of time it will run. Popped the fuel hose out of the carbs and into a jar and pumping fine, reconnected and it ran for about 1 minute and died again.

So, changed the coil, took about 15 minutes to swap over and it ran for about 3-4 minutes and died.

Let the whole thing cool for about half hour then hooked up the timing light and the timing was about 3 degrees out. Adjusted the dizzy and it ran a lot smoother, but only for about 10-15 minutes and then died again. Now I had left the timing light connected up and as the symptoms started you could see the timing light cutting out and missing a few and then getting worse until it stopped.

I have spoken to my local ignition specialist, British Classis Cars in bromsgrove. They seem to think it is either the dizzy is knackered or the ignition amplifier. They have recommended a new high output dizzy and coil, which does away with the current dizzy, coil and amplifier.

Any more thoughts!

Thanks

Too tight probably, the valve stem expands as it gets hot closing the clearance, meaning that the valve may not close completely.

Dizzy and amplifier are in the boot of the car, will drop them round tonight.

Thanks Rich. Fingers crossed this is the cure.
