How are you going to attach the windmill to the sierra?...... cable ties?

Yer girt big 'uns. Mounted on top of a 30 foot pylon, will be like "Angel of the North" only better;as "Sierra of the South" will light up & move to face the wind; that's if it's blowing.

Jon, there are several pieces in the "may come in useful" box & it wouldn't be right to ignore these & buy something else. Intend to have a pulley & layshaft coupled by belt to a much larger pulley on the wind-shaft, as the wind motor is a low speed/high torque design for driving a water pump. The other end of the lay-shaft will be a U/J connection to the alternator, this will allow a waterproof cover to be fitted.

lets say you wind mill at full rpm is 300

an altenater is most efficant from +3000 rpm

per 10 amps draw 1hp is required

30 amp alternator charging a empty battery will require 3hp to turn it

if at 300 rpm you wind mill prodces 30 hp at 3000 rpm you will have 3hp

so at full wind speed you will only just turn the alternator and we dont have many days where it will reach full wind speed.

the best way would be to turn the alternator into a permant motor, if you get some magnets to replace the outer coils, if the inner coil dose fail, then you can get a new alternator and just repace the outer coils onthat 1 with the magents from the old 1.#

or i might be able to make a motor for work disapeare (they do seem to have a trick of disapearing) :db:

use some thig like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-Strong-Neodymium-block-magnets-F50mm-x-20mm-x-10mm-N35-grade-Rare-Earth-/370632703117?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item564b6e3c8d

Here is a copy of the advert that appeared in "The Countryman" October 1939. This is my windmill,I have the original blue-print of 1932 for the pylon, which reads just like the instructions contained in Meccano Sets. 1.5 tons of cast iron & steel for around £20!!

Al, beans ,onions AND balance a-top a 30 foot ladder whilst discharging the power of said beans, onions.

No worries about the batteries, thanks for your efforts;may take a long time this play project as have no where big enough to assemble the mill head in-doors. But that is only at the moment.
