Pinto Timing

Recommended Posts

Just fitted an accuspark electronic dizzy, coil, 8mm silicon leads n Iridium plugs and car started straight up, but ticking over about 1200 revs, timing marks (8deg BTDC on pulley I think??) looked way out with strobe but when brought into alignment engine seemed to slow down n not run as smooth, on road test it seemed to be pinking quite badly. Can anybody recommend ignition settings (possibly with diagram of cast pulley marks) for a 2L (205 block) engine to help me out

Thanks in advance ( no pun intended lol)

Harry

Hi Harry,

I have an accuspark dizzy and actually checked my timing yesterday using a timing light gun. My engine is a standard 2.0 pinto (205) came out of a 2.0i automatic granada and is completely stock only now it runs a 32/36 weber. My car runs fine, ticks over nice (850-900) and doesnt pink. My settings are as follows: when warm on tick over 12 deg BTDC on pulley (cast) and then its giving 36 deg of advance at 3500 plus.

I'm no expert and my car came fitted with the dizzy - just letting you know what my settings are for my set up - are you running a standard cam? If not that would change your ignition settings.

Cheers Andy.

Mine is tdc with vac of with vac on its 16 degrees but that was after altering timing from 18degrees out without the engine running so was roughly 2teeth out but ran without pinking and pulled like a train lol

remember to find the mark from the correct side of the pulley as in snapperpauls diagram... I might have accidentally counted the notches from the wrong side once :sorry: was fine as i think it just gave a bit less advance than it should until i realised and re-did it from the correct side :)

i thought standard 2ltr was 12 degrees and 1.6 was 10 degrees although i've read a few people run at slightly more advance. If you have a lumpy cam it's unlikely to tick over nicely at low revs.
