Not quite sure what happened - came to start my car and it started as normal but there was a high-pitched whining noise, almost like gas escaping. In a panic, I turned off the ignition. The engine stopped but my starter motor was on, trying to start the engine (ignition off!!) - I turned the ignition back on and the engine started and the whine was gone.

With hindsight, I think the whining was the starter motor not having disengaged and being spun by the engine?

Now, I'll come clean here - I have just done a bit of re-wiring (which is why this question is in 'electrics') but it was just to add a distribution box behind the dash for everything that needs a switched ignition. Attached is the new wiring setup - anyone see anything in that that might explain what happened?

Note I do have a switch in the starter motor circuit as a simple immobiliser but I haven't changed that.

Possible mechanical fault in the starter solenoid, crap ( technical term ) is preventing the return spring from doing its job.

Had exactly the same issue last weekend. It was the ignition barrel. Cleaned contacts. Wd40 into the keyway and it hasn't happened again
