Just started happening, car will run for a few minutes or even up to 10 or 15 then cuts out and then will not start. When it cuts out the engine just stops, no missing, or running like ad dog with 3 legs, just smoothly stops?.

I wondered if it was to do with the fuel vapour separator, but beginning to think its not that from what I have read. Any ideas guy would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I have sorted this 3 times and ended up pushing it home each time (I'm 74 and getting my ear bent from my wife who wants it gone), I currently can only thrust it to go round the block.

Stopping like this is either ignition or fuel.

When it stops remove a spark plug as soon as possible, if it is wet or smells of petrol the problem is ignition. Probably a case of substitution to find the fault.

If it stops clean then most probably not choke stuck on.

Be prepared next time it stops and remove the petrol pipe to the carb. and immediately crank the engine if petrol spurts out it is not pump related. I had the mechanical pump stick when warm due to the follower sticking stopping fuel flow. To crank the engine single handed I had a cable crock clip to the started solonoid and touched the other end to the battery positive.

Just some ideas that I would do.

Thanks some good ideas to check out.

Run without air filter so that you can look down the carb barrels. As soon as the engine cuts out look down the main barrel and open the throttle quickly to operate the throttle pump, if there is no squirt of petrol it would confirm an empty float chamber. If it always starts with Easy Start then again as IanS says it's going to be fuel shortage.

I've only ever had one car with a carb (an old VW Polo) and I had to once remove the fuel pump to fix a leaking O-ring. When I refitted the pump, I stupidly put the pipes on the wrong way round, so it was pumping petrol out of the carb and back to the fuel tank 😀

Ran for about 60 seconds before gently switching off 😀
