  1. First build and need some trestles. All the ones I can find only quote a max load of 150-200 kg (not sure if that is per trestle or per pair) - is that enough for the chassis and up to rolling chassis? If so, any preference for wood, plastic or metal?

    Cube Fuel Pump

    Ok, thanks all...

    Cube Fuel Pump

GBS are offering a cube fuel pump for £45 but there are loads on the Bay for £12or so. I'm happy to pay £45 if the GBS one is any different to the cheap chinese ones - any one know if they are any good? Example below: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=171436731218&alt=web

    Caliper Painting

Ok, thanks all - so no need for a primer of any sort? What is etch primer for (i keep seeing it mentioned )?
  5. I've had a new pair of calipers delivered. They are lovely and shiny now but bare metal - should i paint them? I want to anyway but what is the process - some sort of primer/undercoat first? Do i have to strip it down or can i just mask off the rubber bits? Hammerite or special paint of some sort?
  6. I thought I'd read that emission tests at IVA were not as strict as an MOT? I ask this because there is a thread on the GBS forum of owners struggling to get through the MOT - you have to fit a lambda sensor and get a special emissions map for the ECU which isn't quite sorted yet etc, etc. I'm not bothered about resale value...can i choose an age-related plate? For example, I'm getting a 'new' Zetec engine which could only have been built about 2004. Could i request an 04 plate, maybe?
  7. Reading the pinned thread about MOT emission tests, it would seem to me that having a Q plate will make the MOT a piece of cake. Even though I hope to qualify for a new plate, can I opt for a Q plate and ensure simple MOT tests in the future? Or is it not that simple?

    Gbs Rear Brakes

Included, according to that Rally Design link? So they are the right ones?
  9. Are these cosworth calipers the same as kit spares sell (well, i can't find them on the website now but I'm sure they do them): http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=13593 I assume they're ok - or is there a reasonable cheaper alternative?

    Fire Pit

My sister has one and they work really well because all the holes provide excellent air flow for the fire. Not sure if you could design a better firepit if you tried

    Engine Ecus

Starting my first build soon with a Zetec engine. GBS only seem to offer an Emerald ECU for £700 . The Megajolt seems much cheaper - is it any good? Is there any other make i should consider? Thanks.

    Fuel System

I should just have you 2 on speed dial Got the list, Richard, which is why i was confused - it has an LP pump, filters but the 'fuel kit' doesn't. I think I'll do what turnipfarmer says - don't suppose either of you can confirm if the eBay swirl pot will fit the GBS? There's also a 1.5L version which is 200mm high - is that better? Thanks guys...

    Fuel System

First build of my GBS Zero and lots of questions. .. GBS have sent me a quote of £400 for a 'fuel system kit'. On questioning them, this includes the following : Pump & filter mounting Kit Fuel injection Pump Fuel Pressure Regulator Swirl pot and mounting bracket Pipes and various brackets. Now, I could be wrong but this doesn't seem to be a full kit IMO. Don't I need another pump and a filter? Do I need the swirl pot or is there a cheaper alternative? TIA.
  14. Thanks Richard - i may take you up on that... :good:

    Engines 101

I know i worked out a budget before i started which must have included these bits but it's a bit shocking when a box of electronics costs almost as much as an engine! Thanks for all the replies :-)
  16. Went for this - low profile and a little more expensive but better reviews: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00521RGXG/ref=s9_simh_gw_p263_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=14YX60WH0T84S6RVZE2Q&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294
  17. Tooling up - are these any good or cheap muck? http://pages.ebay.co...0534429&alt=web (Don't know whythat link is going to the US site....)

    Engines 101

Some very basic questions - I'm about to start my first build and I'm confused about what i get with an engine. I plan on using a basic 2.0 L Zetec - nothing fancy. I see lots of blogs and posts about aftermarket throttle bodies, ECUs etc. When i look at places selling engines, none seem to explain exactly what you get for your money - would i expect an engine to have an ECU of some sort? Manifolds? Alternator? Pumps? Flux capacitor? What should I expect to have to buy extra? Sorry for stupid questions....
  19. Thanks for all the replies - I'll check the other companies
  20. Gawd, so much to learn...sump next - has anyone simply raised the engine, rather than fitting (or hacking) a lower sump? I guess you'd need a bonnet hump (although i like them) or are there more fundamental issues with doing that (maybe prop shaft angle?)? Prompted by the cost of the Raceline sump...

    New Zetec Engine

Who would have guessed it - a salesman being economical with the truth

    New Zetec Engine

I specifically asked that at Stoneleigh and both the GBS and TIger sales guy insisted they were 'brand new' and had not been sitting around for years. I know i could buy an old one and it will probably be fine but knowing my luck it will be a crock of s**t and I'll end up paying more to get the darn thing fixed. Even if it's been sitting for 10 years, zero miles is a lot less stress than 70k, even if driven by a granny.

    New Zetec Engine

See, why didn't that come up when i did my search?! Many thanks...

    New Zetec Engine

Soon to start a new build and i really want a nice, new 2.0 Zetec. GBS will sell me one for about £900 but i can't find anyone else selling them, to compare costs. Anyone suggest an alternative or is £900 ok?
