Type 9 Gearbox Tailshaft Oil

I have a type 9 gearbox which I've just fitted to the engine (out of the car). When attaching the gearbox if it tipped to far i.e. tailshaft down then gearbox oil leaked out of the tailshaft where the propshaft will be fitted once in the car. Does this indicate that some seals need replacing? if so which ones? Apologies if this is a daft question but I don't know a lot about gearboxes.

Thanks

Not necessarily Dave it may be a good point to replace it tho. Oil will pour out of the back of the gearbox if the prop shaft is not in place, the seal, seals on the shaft. Usual trick is to tape a bag/plastic cup or similar over the end to stop the mess!

I am really pleased to hear that!

I bought a type 9 a few weeks back and sat it flat in the back of my van (when I collected it the box was standing on the bellhousing). On the 100 mile drive back it emptied huge amounts of oil in the back of my van and the smell was dreadful so thanks for confirming I haven't bought a dud!

Well its a bit of a myth to be honest. They will run quite happily on ATF which mine did after a rebuild and a recommendation from the Gearbox reconditioner. But I had a drain plug in my Type 9 that would never FULLY seal. I have sealed it now... Anyway the thin ATF just liked to run out. I changed to 80 thicker stuff and noticed no difference in the gearchange and the leak actually got a lot less.. Subsequently fixed properly. So I would go with with what Ford recommended.

I wait to be shot down in flames but I'm happier with standard stuff. as its less prone to running out of seals

don't think i'd try that. I remember a thread on here and the chap was told by a gearbox specialist not to use super slick modern stuff as the syncro wouldn't work properly and you'd get worse gearchange. I just put in the standard recommended stuff on the basis that if it lasted 115k+ miles with it then its prob going to be alright to continue with a fresh lot of the same. well thats my hope anyway.

BGH geartec recomend the standard stuff.

I have also heard that ATF eats the bronze syncro's.

ATF is ok in an all steel box but I will be using what Ford recommend.

We use an old prop shaft end to stop the oil coming out of the gearbox when we move them

For the sake of a few quid I would reccommend changing the seal as a precuationary measure.

any idea of the part number for the seal as I will get one before putting my 5 speed in over winter

BGH stressed using ONLY a GL4 NOT a GL5 type gearbox oil when I picked up my box. Some internals are made specifically for BGH but most are off the shelf FORD parts.

They supplied COMMA oil to use in it & it's a slick as a slicky thing!
