I've been working on it today. Sorting the distributor was a pain but should all be done now. Had to go pick up Sarah and now at the outlaws so didn't get chance to test it. Once I've got that going I'll get one taking the diff as prop shaft out.

As I didn't have much time tonight I decided to investigate coolant leak. It appeared to have leaked from bottom rad hose connection at rad end. It was rather brown so decided to drop it. Lots of brown rubbish in rad so flushed it through untill looked clean and only getting clear water out. Then refilled and ran up to temp and dropped it again. Still dirty but much better so decided to refill. Went start engine to bleed through and it ran for a minute and died.

Quick diagnosis, no fuel. Odd as tank should be nearly full. Dash agreed. Dip tank, definitely lots of fuel. Double check carb and fuel filter. Definitely no fuel. Only conclusion is must be pump related. Remove mechanical pump as jump manually. Fuel flows easily and car starts perfectly. Turn engine over by hand to check push rod is moving, ah, there's the problem. Push rod seems to be stuck in a half way position, how on earth this can happen I don't know.

Current thoughts are pull push rod out and diagnose further or pull it out, blank it off and fit an electric pump.

Final sentence is the best answer for reliability.

Old fashioned pumps with mechanical switching was not as good as a decent modern electric pump with the right capacity.

If you remove the pump push rod, you will get a nasty oil leak through the lower breather in the pump.

Blanking plates are easy to make using the gasket as the outline shap. Rough cut metal plate and clean up with mr angry and files. Drill the two mounting holes and Bobs your uncle.

Quick last thought though. It is easy to fit the pump with the lever arm going under instead of over the cam drive. Unlikely but worth a check first. It would have shiny marks on the top of the lever if wrong way.

Success!!

As always with this car a number of things conspired against me.

1) fuel filter was in backwards which had cause a part to break free and cause a small blockage

2) although there was fuel in the tank as confirmed by gauge and dipping last night I decided I best check more accurately to get a read of exactly how much. The answer, not a lot.

3) although the tank was low, the pickup pipe was just inside the top of the fuel meaning that manually pumping was just enough to up fuel, the engines shorter stroke on the pump was not.

So, more fuel in, check pump workin on engine. All looks good.

Prime carb. Start. Success. Let car run up to temp. No leaks. Fan kicks in. Still no leaks. Fan cools engine and turns off. Still no leaks. Check expansion bottle. Working as designed.

All round win!

Diff is out!

Prop was stuck in box :(

Heavy dose of wd40 specialist fast release penetrate, a rope, a broom handle and so grunting has got it out though.

Rubber doughnut is wrecked. I have previously in this threa said I'm sure it would be ok for IVA. I take it back. They need replacing with a proper shaft as soon as you find one in a car. This doughnut looks almost new but has split at all 3 mounting points!
