My engine has broken!! I was putting the finishing touches to my Canary yellow 2b this morning, getting it ready for a good run out tomorrow to the show. took it for some petrol and when I got back, nasty rattles from the engine, particularly under load. it was supposedly rebuilt by a specialist 1000 miles ago, But a couple of years ago) What do I do now? do I get it rebuilt again? to be quite honest I would be happy with a standard 2.0 engine, although I am a petrol head, I dont need the loudest/fastest etc. This one has been rebored to 2.1 and has a piper cam. would I be better off with a 2.0 zetec? It would be nice to find someone who could do the engine swap for me, quite happy to pay, but not astronomical prices. will I get any change out of a £1000 for someone supplying and fitting a new/recon engine? they can keep the old bits, might

Looking on that site I came across this. Not the cheapest way of doing it but you could no doubt sell your engine to reduce the cost.

yes nice thought if I could afford it, how difficult would it be to put a ford 2.0 zetec in to the kitcar, if I had a complete donor car with everything up and running side by side with the kitcar? would the zetec fit onto the pinto gearbox do you know?

regards,

Jim.

Jim its not hard its a matter of cost. You would need say a 2.0,silver or blacktop zetec. Then the exhaust and inlet are different. It will mate on your box, type 9 i pressume, but you may need to pay for clutch components. Cooling will become an issue as you will need a water rail to move thermostat.ignition will need sourcing as zetec don't have dizzy, an edis/nodiz.

Long story short, as I said before your going to run close to 2k.car will be off road, wife will get pixxed off. You get the picture.

Either way you'll end up with a knackered pinto to sell.

I'd save your self the hassle and consider a rebuilt motor from a reputable company that will take yours in part exchange or sell yours to recoup cash.

Even if you rebuilt yours, and I mean correctly, then your looking at about 5 to £600 in just machine shop work, then you got new gasket set and core plugs. Then add in your time and fuel costs to get from A to B. It all builds up. You then need to check this work and rebuild. For that you need tools and time and skill.

Hence it may not be the cheapest but a less stress full and much quicker way could be to source a rebuilt long engine and part yours or sell on after.

At least that's a one for one swap and your other components can still be used. Have a look around, there's loads of advice support and opinions here.

Sorry its a bit of a long winded ramble, I'll finish by saying you can always take a chance on a cheaper standard engine that's a runner in a car,its a chance, way cheaper, but may or not break down..

Thanks for this Paul, I really do appreciate your help, its just my simplistic way of thinking that if I had a 2.0 zetec mondeo or something with everything on it, would it be just a case of swapping parts over and modifiying some stuff, I know I would need a new manifold but you can get thme built.

cheers,

Jim.

Look at race line for water rail, you will need a different clutch system. You will need an adaptor to spin the coolant pump correctly and also a different mount for alternater. As said exhaust is on other side and you will need different inlet.

If £1300 is to expensive right now I'd consider the pinto getting rebuilt/exchanged. Just on ease and simplicity.

could I not just use the one off the mondeo and the engine wiring loom? not looking to boost performance of the standard engine, quite happy to use it as it comes.

I think you need to step back and look at the work involved in an engine swap. It's never as simple as it seems reading up on it on a forum. Currently you have a nackered engine but you are without the tools to pull it out and sort it. And I don't mean any disrespect to you on that. Not every one has an engine hoist and a kitted out garage to do the work. But a conversion will be a lot more difficult, time consuming and expensive. And ultimately will end up with lots of fabrication and swearing. Ultimately the zetec package is a better set up but it all depends what you want out of the car. I don't think £1000 will come close to covering the cost of a conversion, but it will get you a half decent pinto, and your car is set up for that, pull out the old one and drop in the new. It's a weekends work if you are new to the game. You can get an engine hoist for around £130. If it were me I would go with a pinto. Either way your engine needs to come out and be rebuilt/replaced. On another note part of owning a kit car is learning the mechanics of it. This would be a good opportunity for you to pull the pinto an take it apart and find out what's wrong and learn how to do it yourself. It's only nuts and bolts at the end of the day
