Headwear and security

Hi All,

I have been doing some research in past threads but only seem to find dated info.

As a newbie naturally I have a lot of questions so apologies.

in terms of eye wear is there anything anyone can recommend, a few threads pointed me to uk sports eye wear but with so many different variants I am unsure which would be the best one to go for, any recommendations would be great

Same with helmets do you go for anything race specific or a case going down to your local motorbike shop and picking the best one that you find comfortable for long days out?

Additional Security

Is there anything you go for specifically if your out and about on a days drive and park up somewhere for a bite to eat or go a drive out visiting family and friends and take the kit car rather than the family car and leave it in a car park for two to three hours?

If youre worried about stones, bugs etc, look at safety glasses from the likes of ARCO, toolstation, screwfix etc.

I have a standard full face motor cycle helmet that I use for trackdays, its always passed their inspection.

I also have an electrical cutoff switch, and a hidden switch for my electric fuel pump to stop joy riders.

I was always told if you've got this label on a helmet it's good for the road & trackdays.

Security wise I found one of the handbrake/gearlever locks useful - it's enough to stop somebody just letting the handbrake off & pushing it around.

Have a look at eBay item 175438048950 to give you an idea of what I'm on about.

I did think has anyone ever tried to drop the handbrake and push it away.

I looked at the handbrake locks this afternoon and added it to my watch list I didn’t know if there was anything else at all.

i am picking up the car Tuesday and it has got a quick release steering wheel on it, which will help just can’t go walking around with the steering wheel haha.

i will have to look for a cut off switch for the fuel pump hidden as that’s a good idea.

Don't bother with the handbrake lock, waste of time, a swift kick from the side will see it come off, battery cut-off switch is a good idea, or as you say a hidden switch on the fuel pump.

I use a padlock on the handbrake, with the padlock fitted the handbrake cannot be released. Nice and simple but effective.

I could get that off in less than 30 seconds, the fact is if the 1% wants your car they are going to take it, what you have to stop or at least slow down is the other 99% which this will do.

If somebody is determined to steal your car it will be gone, but, as Phaeton says, it's a matter of deterring the opportunists or "messers".

I came back to my 2B on a number of occasions where someone had let the handbrake off and pushed it a short distance, then leaving it where it was in everyone's way - with the handbrake lock on I never had a problem again. I'm guessing it was probably just stupid kids who thought it was funny.

Fit a screen and you don't need helmet or glasses and you can then get doors and a roof so it is semi-practical all year round. After years on bikes, I never wanted a car that needed a helmet. Also, having doors does put people off just leaning in and releasing the handbrake - I've watched people looking very confusedly at my doors 😉

I fitted a switch in the ignition circuit (in plain view on my dash but labelled as a fan 🙂 ) so even if you had the key, it wouldn't start if the switch wasn't pushed in. This actually caught me out on the first time I tried to start my engine - couldn't work out why it wouldn't turn over until I realised I hadn't pushed the switch in 🙂

TBH, unless you have a new, shiny Caterham, I don't think our cars are in the least interesting to a car thief - the parts are almost worthless, the market is very small and our cars are too unique to be able to just sell them on - I never worried about it.
