  1. Thanks for the support guys... I have been busy on stripping down the spare engine to see if its any good, as I didn't know the condition or if it was even a runner.... Opened her up and apart from some very dark oil...the internals look to be pristine. Checked big ends and mains and all looks good. No scoring in bores either, thank God... Now on with the cleaning, painting and polishing before the rebuild. Going to do a full rebuild this time including new head gasket, and re-seating valves etc...just to be on the safe side .... Looks like some busy times ahead
  2. Keith, small particles of shot blast seem to become lodged into the casting. These beads remain attached despite vigorous cleaning attempts. When they get hot and in oil they become dislodged and work their way into ghe engine, effectively becoming a grinding paste. Because the car was sat all weekend we think all the crap went into the sump, which then got passed through oil pump on 1st run... Causing catastrophic failure....
  3. Well here we go with the next installment.. Today was just to tidy up a few loose end and do a final power run for the 2nd map. Even fitted a nice shiney new air filter Got the car warmed up and went into first power run. at 6K revs noticed a drop in power so immediately shut down. Tried to restart and engine sruggled to crank.........oh dear So tried to crank by hand and engine was very tight..........oh s@it Took of rocker cover and found cams to be dry of oil. so checked oil pressure by cranking engine over a few time....0 Looking like a knackered oil pump, which for an MX5 is a bit unusual. Took the sump off and look what we found waiting inside Not looking too good. So proceeded to strip out the oil pump. Pump was very gritty and hard to turn. As soon as Mike said this he looked at me and asked......have you just fitted a different CAM cover? Er yes last Friday, a nice freshly powder coated one...why? Did they shot blast it by any chance? Yes but it was cleaned several times, scrubbed and flushed with petrol so I'm confident no debris was inside. Mike then said yep, its your CAM cover thats caused the problem. They have seen 5 other cars (MX5's not Sr2'S) suffer the same/ similar issue over the years, the last just a few weeks ago. The MX5 seems to be particularly susceptible. So now I have an engine that is no more than scrap sat in the Sr2.....knackered big ends, main bearings, scored bores, cam bearings etc etc... :sorry: :sorry: And all for a nice shiney rocker cover....doh! Ah well that means I have a further excuse to play in the garage over Xmas hols, re-building and cleaning the spare engine. Bits ordered tonight and letter sent to Santa A massive thanks though to Mike at Roadrunner and his guys for the efforts in stripping the car down to find the problem and the time spent stopping me from slitting my wrists... So looks like next power runs will be finalised in the new year.... I'll keep you posted This year has taught me a lot of things and some things just aren't worth worrying too much about....sometimes s#it just happens. At least it couldn't have happened in a more convenient place.... 8)
  4. Yes the amount of torque achieved was really surprising. On first run we had 165lbs at 2500 revs...compared to a normal 1.8 MX5 of 65lbs almost 3x the amount  Now we have it coming in a bit steadier so much more driveable.... I'm gonna take some catching next year no matter which way the cars pointing ..
  5. Hi Rob Not quite sure how much more torque we can push, think it would be close to the 200lb mark. So for the smallish gain we are going on the side of caution. Add that to the fact that i'm now skint, we are aiming to do a map thats 1/ within budget, 2/ Driveable......just
  6. Hi Bob, Yes power was still going up. We are pretty sure that Bhp figures showing are a bit lower as we had real issues keeping traction on the Rolling road...top revs shown on Rolling road are at 6500 rpm, however we were actually taking the car up to 7500 rpm... Boost levels peaked at 9psi, but were constant at around 7...so some pretty good gains for the 1st map...
  7. Well just had a fantastic day at Roadrunner setting up the Canems ECU and the supercharger. I'm having it dual mapped. 1st map will be relatively tame for normal road use. 2nd Map will be "Kamikaze" for that little bit extra So today was spent doing the initial set-ups, dialing in the vernier cams and a bit of wiring for the boost gauge etc... 1st map now set. Really chuffed. Power boost is almost instant. 1st Map now giving me 182lb's torque and 213Bhp. Compared to standard MX5 of approx 115 lb torque and 130bhp...A nice little gain. Rolling road SR2 12-12-14.pdf Even at this above 50mph the car was lighting up the rear tyres on the rolling road so three of us were sat on the back to add some weight...This car is going to be a bit lively me thinks... Next week we are working on the 2nd map and are expecting 230+bhp although we aim to keep a similar torque as this is getting close to max limits for the standard clutch,,,,watch this space. All I can say is Rich....a testament to your skills mate...cracking job. What a Xmas present
  8. Thats me all booked up..... Anyone waiting to book better hurry up. Only double rooms left in Travelodge at Helensburg...
  9. Hotel BB & Dinner booked for me
  10. Hi Nigel As Rich says. silicon just popped on to give an idea of fit. If you look you'll see no clips fitted... Now I've worked out locations proper hoses on order....at £22 each I didn't want any mistakes...
  11. Got some mesh bent around and really chuffed with how it looks...You can even make out the logo on the charger Bit of tidying up to do and i'm almost ready......better get the new underwear on my xmas list...think I may be needing some
  12. Started some work on the charger today, getting it ready for nexts week. New ECU and Rolling road set up and a few other bits and pieces... So started work on finding a place for the intercooler, after a bit of head scratching have worked how it will fit in...just about. So now on to the very nerve racking bit. ...............cutting a bloody great hole in the bonnet. Wheres Marcus when you need him  So here goes. Tried to keep it in the lines of the side bulge but very quickly saw that wasn't going to be big enough. So opened up to suit...Cut a bit, try it, cut a bit more try again....After several nerve racking hours think I have just about got there and pretty pleased with the end result.
  13. bump....reduce to £50 +p&p....need the cash to pay for the wifes wine habbit
  14. Its most probably Glass filled Nylon/ ABS which is most commonly used in injection moulding for automotive use.... Try getting some of this...should do the trick http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/epxy_plstc_s/overview/Loctite-Epoxy-Plastic-Bonder.htm HTH
  15. Throwing another one out there after seeing some car trims finished off today when taking some parts for powder coating. Saw 3D carbon effect hydro printing.... Was really impressed with the finish. Closest I've seen to the real thing and not expensive..... Check out Carink in Sheffield.....
  16. Gob smacked guys.... Bought a tear to my eye. Cracking job, both of you.....
  17. Looks even better mounted on the engine Rich... Cant wait to get it on the Sr2 for a run....Cracking job mate.
  18. Hi Bought this for the Sr2 and after paying customs their rip off charges pulley stand me at over £80.. however after getting it, I realized that it will adversely affect my planned supercharger performance because pulley diameter is smaller. Pulley will fit any 94-97 1.8 MX5 is brand new, never fitted. If anyone's interested, £60 +post As there seems to be an ever increasing number of MX5 owners here...Will definitely add to engine bling and performance? http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-Racing-Underdrive-Crank-Pulley-Mazda-Miata-94-97-1-8L-Polish-/161480366647?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AMiata&hash=item2598fada37&vxp=mtr
  19. I put split pins through the threaded shaft to prevent adjustment and it went through no problem. One thing you will need though is a sticker/ label (IVA) regs telling you not to adjust bias. This must be fitted close, mine was on tunnel in footwell. HTH
  20. And twin exhausts on a 3 cylinder engine....nice Probably makes more noise than that piddly Monaro Marcus
  21. I must admit it did look a challenge when we were checking out the smaller pulley... Glad you got it off in the end. Sounds as if it was on for life... Hope the new one goes on a bit easier
  22. Can't make this one. Travelling with work... Guess I'm getting better
  23. I'd have a look at the Canems also. Just about to fit one to my car. One for yours will be around £5-600 i'd expect
