I had a noise very similar to this when I had a pinto engine, turned out to be the cam. On the M69 at the time so called in the truck of shame to get home. Shortage of oil from the spray bar onto the cam. Replaced the cam and the noise went into the bin along with the cam and spray bar. If you do replace the cam make sure you follow the instructions to the letter regarding running in time .

Just in case you are not aware.... If you cut the floor in the area shown in red the prop shaft will come out without the need to take the engine and gearbox out. I don't have a picture with it done but I'm sure you will see what I mean once you are under the back.

Regarding the stalks... I've taken some photos to show how they fit. The original stalks are cut off at the point where the new stalks can be screwed and glued into the remaining stalk.

A different way of looking at this problem..... These screw into the base of the stalks. The problem is that there is no windscreen washer button on the end of the washer arm. I put a button on the dash instead. https://kitspares.co.uk/products/aluminium-stalks

I have a couple of boxes of C20XE (Red Top) spares. Too many to list individually but include KS cylinder head with cams, valves, springs etc. Engine wiring loom with ECU serviceability not known. Several throttle bodies. I don't want to split up so £200.00 the lot. Use what you can sell the rest.

From bitter experience... Make sure the inner cable is free in the outer especially when the outer is compressed as it will be in use. I bought a new cable a few years ago which was free until the outer was compressed when it locked up solid.
