Standard Headlights, What To Upgrade To?

Despite me having had the 2B on the road for over 5 years now, last night was the first time I've driven the thing when it was actually dark. All I can say is the standard sealed beam units supplied by GBS are utter pants. What upgrades have been tried and are they worth the cost/effort?

I used Wipac Quadoptic 7" units which are about £30 a pair - good value and work well. Depends on whether you want something that looks good on the car or you want to see in the dark really.

My personal view is that smaller units aren't always better because their either smaller reflectors or small projector units so don't always give out more light and when I find a 7" halogen light inadequate, I'm probably driving too fast in the dark.

Sealed beams were never good , change to bulb fit with h4 bulbs and something like Ring hi out put bulbs they are legal but much brighter than older bulb ,even halogen . the next bit I havent told you but 100/80 watt bulbs are available for off road use you could risk it :acute:  mick

MK1 MX5 units will fit the standard 7" and are really good with halogens. Used them on my Sr2. Always could see what I was about to hit well in advance 8) Nice cheap alternative

+1 for above.

I have used rally or off road bulbs in many a tin top in the past. Luckily I've never been stopped because of them and even been through mot with them in.

You must realise that they are illegal though and normal halogen bulbs will probably give off enough light for you.

Hmmmmmm! Decisions, decisions. Thanks for the suggestions folks, leaning towards Tractors' DRL based units. I've seen similar on GBS's website but thought they were a bit pricey! I have bulbs at home which may or may not be the right wattage........... so £45 for the pair seems good to me, now, when do I get paid?
