Is this not a similar thing to reshelling a car, If a 1975 mk 1 escort rally car was rolled in competition, then you reshelled it using the original docs, that is legal, you can add new parts, you hear of it all the time in the rally world, people reshelling cars and sticking them on the same plates as the original car.

its a non svad lightweight

warwick its been known for some time that you have circumvented the legality of the regestration of your lightweight .

however it is a different matter when you involve a third party who is not aware of the ramicafications of your actions either keep the car at your own risk or scrap it do not pass on the problems.

we have all kept quiet about this issue and i personally have had e mails asking me not to ask pointed questions,

either sva it as a lightweight or scrap it and recover the usable parts.

all the lightweight builders have the same problem .

but to pass it on to someone who knows knothing of the history or the poss solutions is reprehensible

.

if you have a concience you should do the right thing.

i have not intended to affend but to state the facts as i see them

Don't remember Lotus using the old 2.0L Pinto/type 9 combination

It's the "I rebuilt it using modern technology" bit that cracks me up. Or at least it would if this whole saga wasn't so disgraceful.

if this is your car and we think it is then you need to either defend your position or explain why you are able to claim the description that you have given it .

we are not here to judge your actions but to prick your concience.

just because you live in a remote part of the country does not make you imune from the letter of the law

and common decency to another human being who may purchace your re boddied lotus 7 insure it in innocence and then have to sort out the conciquences

In order to retain the original registration mark:

* cars and car-derived vans must use:

The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt).

And two other major components from the original vehicle – ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine.

This is neither the original chassis nor a 'new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original'.

Where are the 'two other major components from the original vehicle'.

However even if it doesn't qualify, it has been registered by DVLA and is on the road. As long as any purchaser was not deceived as to what he/she was buying there is no likelihood of the authorities ever becoming involved unless of course the new owner was to have an unfortunate crash, find he was driving an improperly registered car, his insurance was not valid, he ends up bankrupted from damages and has a spell at her majesties pleasure.

Nigel, I think that depends on exactly what information has been disclosed to the DVLA in order to register the vehicle as a 1969 Lotus. If it has been falsely represented to enable it to be registered as a Lotus then offences are likely to have been committed.

Fraudulent use of a Vehicle Registration Mark can carry a sentence of up to two years' imprisonment.

If it was this easy to register a 7 type kit by *bleep*ising the identity of a historic car then wouldn't we all be doing it, and why does VOSA and DVLA insist on such stringent inspection/registration procedures for newly built kit cars??

Sorry, but this sounds like a cheat to me, and it even qualifies for 'free' road tax!!! I pay my bloody road tax, as I paid for my SVA, registration etc etc. <_<

I'm not knocking the builder but,

as the car hasn't been through SVA who knows that it's safe considering the lightweight issues that have been mentioned on here.

This is very underhand and warwick should come on here and explain this.

It might be easy to do and use yourself, but selling it on to someone else is terrible.

Just my tu'penny worth

Rich, we're all seething with this, each having been through the process of building our cars and obtaining that MAC to gain official confirmation that the standard was met. The free tax is just the final kick in the twisticles. The seller is unlikely to find one iota of support here. It may be withdrawn from ebay and sold locally to some unsuspecting victim.
