Diesel Engine Option

HiAnyone fitted a Ford diesel i.e 1.8Td from a sierra or Mondeo I have been told that they can be fitted to the type 9 Gearbox I was wondering how difficult this is & what sort of performance does it have. I have a 2B I prefer diesel & finding it a bit difficult to obtain a good SOHC 2 litre Inection Pinto .If anyone has fitted a diesel Ford I would like to know of any pitfalls before buying a diesel donor.

I saw that car being built in the factory when I went to pick my car up from the factory. Was told it was a snug fit with an intercooler fitted sitting ontop of the rocker cover I guess to deal with the higher ambient temperature In Italy.

I'm thinking it would fit without to much trouble, ecu may be tricky but speek to gbs and see what they say on the matter. Tell you what the torque would bee fun in such a light car.

Hi so I understand I spoke to they're technical guy I was wondering if the sierra 1.8Td or mondeo one fits without any mods to the chassis i.e. if the mounting brackets from the donor are used & if it was relatively straighforward fit also if the slightly later mondeo version had more horsepower.

Tempted as I am a bit of a fan of diesel & if using only a 6 gallon fuel tank with diesel economy it would mean less refills.

If your budget could stetch to it i,d recommened the duratorq i have a 2.0L focus with the 138bhp version and it flys, (for a diesel) in a car 1/2 the weight it would be a right laugh 145000 miles and no problems.

The Sierra 1.8TD's were 75bhp and the Mk 2 Mondeo's 90bhp so a Mondeo one would be better, same basic engine though that dates back to those really old gutless Escort and Orion 1.6D's from the late 80's/early 90's. Tough as nails though. Even better an early TDDI 90bhp Mk 1 Focus is the same engine as well but direct injection, more torque, better economy. Must be a few of those around in breakers now.

Ok so I know that this might sound like a mad idea but I have a golf GT TDI 1.9 PD running at 150hp stock and I'm told it will easily tune to over 200hp (ECU remap, air induction etc). Suppose I wanted to put this into a zero kit what would my chances be? They say anything can be done...

well i've never done anything like that myself but reading how much grief just getting a zetec to mate up nice to the ford gearbox with the correct clutch, spigot bearings, pressure plates, sumps, etc i wouldn't embark on something that hasn't been done by others as it will be a steep learning curve. and probably expensive. You'd need a custom bellhousing for a start £200-£300? if they even make one.

 

don't mean to sound defeative and if thats what you want go for it but do a lot of research first.

 

I have thought of diesel myself and running veg oil, maybe one day.

 

I would definitely run the exhaust out the back though, would not be healthy with it out the side with all the particulates from the diesel.

There is a member running a late ford deisel in the newark area ,not seen it but he did post on here quite a lot ,I think it may be turbo'ed and also runs on veg oil hth mowerman

Nobody ever considered a BMW diesel?

 

Two litre four pot, already set-up for RWD, 150-180bhp out of the box with 210 easily attained. Unsure about the management side of things though, perhaps this is the problem?

Don't know if the bmw diesel is the same hieght as the petrol engines but if it is then if is too tall. Which is why the petrol engines aren't used that much in the 7's. My e46 is tilted to one side to get it to fit under the bonnet of my 316.

 

hopefully someone can confirm the height of the diesel engine.

The reason I suggested the golf as it's one of the most powerful 4 cylinder diesels that can run veg oil with a twin tank. Did get the idea for a veg oil robin hood from chipfatflyer in the first place. I'd also thought of BMW but the veg oil potential is a bit limited. Exhaust to the back was a must of course.
