What Engine Change Should I Look At From My Pinto

It all depends if you like the low down grunt or the seamless power delivery.

The S2k is a great engine and box for someone that likes really driving a machine but if you're looking for an everyday sort of 7 then it may not be the best option.

I didn't know that the S2k and GB was 75kg heavier than the the Zetec / Type 9 competitor and am truly shocked. Being an Ali engine I cant see where the obesity comes from?

I'm still toying with whether to take on another build but if I did the S2k would be very high on my list of possible drive trains. However,

I also cant see how it is heavier as i have both engines in zeros and i can lift both on my self they are heavy but feel about the same i think when ford give the weight of the engine its the bare engine and honda give the full weight with all the ancillarys. oh yeah the honda intake/plenum is about 10KG on its own.

Some great options here chaps.

As I said early on, I am not remotely interested in track days or hill climbing etc....fun day out driving and some long distance touring, obviously with fuel fill ups every 5mins as is the way.

I have not ruled out the BMW 2.5/30.l option yet, but need to check if they will even fit. Didn't think it would be much of an issue. Will try and get a look at one at some point and take some measurements !

The Jag Duratec V6 3.0l option is looking like a great option for what I want as well and looking forward to seeing Alex's install after Easter.

Now here is something else that I have no doubt has been talked about before:-

If the type 9 5 speed box was fitted to the sierra that weighed twice as much, would it not be sensibly that in a car such as the hood, the power increase should be handled without an upgrade as it's not actually under as much strain ? Especially as it's not for racing/hill climbing sort of punishment.

The BMW option would allow me (I think) to use engine and gearbox assuming it will fit, but I would keep the type 9 box with the Jag V6

Again the plan will be to buy a complete donor car for engine transplant so I can use the existing loom/engine management gubbins and hopefully avoid major issues getting it running once installed. Hopefully strip and Sell the rest of the components of the car separately to fund most of the engine cost

So, fun day driving and touring with my hair down....

Type 9 will last with 200bhp above that mt75 better. But if you can get rwd engine and box then obviously much better

Hair down pmsl.. bet you havnt done that for yrs.

I've got a nicely upgraded & tuned 3.9 v8 bolted to the front of a type 9 gearbox and so far there hasn't been any problems with the gearbox......my wheels loose traction before anything else gives....and there are 1 or 2 other hoods with the same set up running longer than I have without problems.

When I was doing my upgrade, I spoke to a company called 'first motion' who specialise in type 9 gearboxes (and upgrading them). Their opinion was that 3rd gear is generally the one that breaks first......and most commonly when used in turbo applications (the sudden burst of power when the turbo kicks in).

Sounds like you have 90% made your mind up on a jag v6, here's a tempter! Just burn the interior its horrible

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-S-TYPE-3-0-V6-SE-/171286329725?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item27e175f97d

Sell off the type 9 and use the jag box, its made for the engine and has clutch, flywheel, starter etc etc ready and waiting and will take the power. Type 9's are fetching £200+ on ebay in unknown condition.

No, thats wrong, my S2000 powered Zero is a fantastic machine - and I go forward far faster than i go backwards :-)

Mines mated to the stock S2000 (6 speed) box and performs really well, ive read somewhere that you can get a sandwich plate that allows you to use a type 9 but Im not sure what the benefits of doing that would be.

S2000 and box is 75kg heavier (I think) than a Zetec and type 9, but mines standard (with S2000 Plenum) and Emerald K6 and obtained 250bhp (flywheel), the torque max's out at 161lb but holds its max from about 3500rpm all the way to 9500 where the limiter is set.

Absolutley the best upgrade ive done .....

sorry think i was getting confused with the honda v-tec engines which do spin the wrong way.

I think the Jag is favourite so far but I wont be buying anything until later this year ! plenty of time to work out options and I am not sold on anything in particular yet at all

I also need to re work my double garage to make room for both cars as I don't want to have a donor car sat on the drive rusting away.

I am lucky in that I have fairly long double garage so I can move my 'workshop area to the back and still get two cars in front.

I like to work in comfort with a brew in hand.....

I assumed the Jag was front wheel drive and people used the type 9/bell as a conversion......not the case at all..

on previous threads read that the Jag gearbox was not that great for the kits....but cant recall why ?? can only assume it was the gear ratio...but cant think why it would not be better than the type 9 from an old sierra...

I help out a team of Morgan owners who run 6 cars in the Holly Birkett 6 hour race.

Team #60 Morgans for fun

http://www.750mc.co.uk/ugc-1/1/41/0/a8e00044-f8b8-481b-a379-780a6d2424c3.pdf

2 of the cars have the V6 Jag engine & run very fast, very reliably.

The engines fit easily(ish) in the Moggy chassis.

s type gearbox ratio

First Gear Ratio (:1) 3.25,

Second Gear Ratio (:1) 2.44,

Third Gear Ratio (:1) 1.55,

Fourth Gear Ratio (:1) 1.0,

Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.75

diff 3.07:1

options would be to use the s-type gearbox and diff and could you have custom drive shafts to retain sierra hubs

use standard ford box and make an adapter plate unless you could pursuade powertorque to make some more of their special bell housings (I do have a dxf drawing of the V6 engine that i found somewhere.)

I am sure I read somewhere that there was a ford box that fitted the V6 but I can't remember which

If I went the Jag engine route, why not just go for a different diff ratio that's a bit closer match to the jag ? Looks to be lots of diff ratio versions and this would save changing all the rear end...

Will get in touch soon Alex and sort a quick trip down to check out your 2B Jag.

Still have split thoughts on what to do, change/ upgrade the hood or brand new build of something different.....I got all excited by the Marlin Sportster but does not look as though it's in production anymore (BMW single donor kit....)
