    Sva Application

anyone know what you are supposed to do if you buy a part built kit? (or a mostly built) and therefore dont have any built up photos? there is a box to tick if you bought part built but it doesnt seem to mention whether this exempts you from the photos? (got my amateur build thingy letter today) paul
  3. i agree with nigel, this just isnt on. why dont they have any record of this? I had assumed that they held this information on a database? is that naive of me? is your licence the only info they have on you? surely they have to have a record in addition to this otherwise how do they ever check it against the licence? if they hold personal data surely one of the requirments of this is that they must keep it accurate and up to date otherwise they are in breach of the deata protection act. what am i saying, this is government, since when have the rules that affect us had any bearing on what they need to do? anyone need a (very) part time researcher?

    Track Days

like enforcer i'm equally puzzled as to why anyone would be doing this? It beggars belief? having only been on one track day so far, and being about the slowest thing there other than the water butts on the chicane i was looking forward to asking john to sit with me on a few laps this year to show me what i should be doing. the track day i attended was well organised, friendly an unintimidating for an utter novice like me. i notice that in johns message he says that he is very close to jacking it all in, but from tims message it looks like he may have actually done this already. if you havent john, and even if you have, i'd ask you to reconsider, and not leave as a result of one idiot, who probably isnt even a member of the club, and then instigate some form of legal action to track the culprit down. i cant imagine why an idiot would be doing this, but it seems a shame that the work you've done by the club would be ended by some moron who's potentially not even in the club. On the email front, there seem to be a few programs that will allow someone to do this kind of magic trick with making emails dissapear. I think the "text" is actually an image so it may be possible to right click and save the image to your hard drive (for use as future evidence) in the same way a screen grab creates an image of the whole screen at any given time so could be used in the same way to give you hard evidence of the email activity. This may help for the phone stuff http://www.zyra.org.uk/hoaxers.htm paul

    Rover Gearbox

Cheers! I think, (not sure) that the P6's only had four speed boxes. I was advised that in a kit car all first will do is spin the wheels and so a five speed would be best? I'll email Ray! Maybe i will get one for this summer. Thanks again paul

    New Engine

if you look here; http://community.rhocar.org/index.php?show...c=18068&hl= it sounds like theres going to be a nearly new pinto going spare very shortly! paul
  11. those volvos are tanks; theres a lot of pretty old ones about. the petrol consumption was the concern though with those. had a friend with one and while it never went wrong in three years the fuel bill (even 5 years ago) was pretty shocking. all that indestructability comes at a cost. vege oil in diesels is a pretty excellent solution if you can be bothered to keep clearing the shelves at tesco! vw and mercs are the best best apparently just sling in oil and off it goes. not sure what it does long term to the engine though. i think some cars need a heat exchanger.
  12. out of interest what was it?
  13. Hello all, with the announcement that tata have launched the worlds cheapest car (Tata Launch) this got me thinkling again about the cheapest possible way to get on four wheels. when i've a bit of time on my hands i end up on autotrader trying to figure out what would be the best value. (sad i know!) i'd looked at little things like the perodua nippa: cheap to buy, tax and based on reliable old Daihatsu Mira (1980's) mechanicals. The only trouble is, you couldnt exactly call it a looker. Various kit cars seemed good value, though again not overly blessed in the looks department. so the challenge is, can we think of the cheapest transport available? for me it would need to have: A low purchase cost (if Tata are pitching in at 2.5k brand new, it has to be under a grand) low running costs: Fuel consumption? Tax? (maybe even tax free?) Reliability. just a thought for an idle moment.

in hindsight it would have made most sense to "change" the engine of the donor prior to SVA. we've now decided to just sva with the sierra which is currently in despite the fact that the rover is back from a refurb. there isnt much to do (in theory) for sva and its a simpler route i think. your idea graham had i thought of it would have been an excellent choice. i wonder if they'd get suspicious if you "changed" and engine on the donor one week then it assed sva as a kit car the week after? thanks again all.

Magic. I love the civil service! Thanks for the advice Chris. I did wonder whether a Q plate made any difference anyway. Called Adrian Flux and they told me it doesnt make any difference to insurance costs anyway, but i've always thought it was a bad thing somehow!

This isnt strictly SVA, but is related. My vindicator is almost ready for SVA and the V8 engine is due back from its rebuild later this week. What i want to knjow is does anyone have a link to the details on age related plates and how we ensure that i dont end up with a Q. Reading previous posts it seems it has been done, alan rowes MNR for one. but does anyone know exactly what the points sysrtem is? I've seen it somewhere but cant remember the details; though i do recall that most weighting was given to engine and transmission. The idea had beento fit a rover gearbox along with the engine (theres plenty of room in a vindicator) as its stronger (or possibly cosworth) but dont want to do this if it will tip me over into Q territory. Any advice? Paul
  17. i have a set of 2b videos they can have if they are of any use. also i'm not sure if this is appropriate but do you think that it might be suitable fore the club to make a small donation to the build fund or the cause? it might even be an opportunity for GBS to donate parts, or even just offer assistance? just a thought.
  18. how much did the kit cost? i'd want at least 7k for whats effectively a brand new car, with plenty of power on tap, and all new parts. paul

    Year End

just a thought regarding shows that might help to reduce the burden. how about each area adopting their own local show? they could then help out setting up, manning the pitch etc. i'd be happy to help out at my local show, and it might mean that the new chairman doesnt have everything to do, all the admin and all the shows; which must be a massive undertaking. paul

    Year End

for me the thought of tim and sue not being at the helm is hard to imagine. i think they must have just about always been in charge while we've had hoods. the warmth of the welcome we got both on this board and at the shows made kit car owning something really special. even though i have something other than a hood now (nearly) i'd like to think that i'll always be a hoodyt and i know that the warmth of the welcome will remain the same. its a great shame that you feel you cant go on with the club, but you know best when enough is enough; especially where health is concerned. health scares tend to put everything else into perspective. one thing that occurred to me on the previous page where it was mentioned about you becoming president etc. instead i wonder if we couldnt keep you as just chairman rather than chairman, membership secretary, events secretary, merchandising officer, and any other roles that arent claimed that you've been forced to pick up over the past few years it might even be easier to find 2 or 3 people to take on these individual roles rather than the whole lot that you've been battling with for the past few years. paul
  21. i drove a mustang convertible whilst on honeymoon and that had a noticeable amount of shake, and the odd bump and clang. i'd be dissapointed if that was mine after 15,000 miles. agree about the saab 93. drove a vector a few years ago and thought it was fabulous

    First Time Buyer!

i'd, certainly recomend havig a look at as many as you can before you buy. the more you see the better idea you'll have about whether you're buying a good un or not. but i'd be curious aboutn where the front wheel arches have gone!

    The Move

others may disagree but for me marketing materials (and i include websites in this) dont have to be fancy or complicated, and only have to fulfill a few criteria 1. Convey a suitable brand image for the company. 2. be informative. 3. be up to date. failure to do any can damage the brand, and thats the most important asset a company controls.
