  1. just been on my first run out this year without any problems!! Such an amazing buzz!!! it's like driving a completly different car now that it has megajolt and tie-bars!!! anyway... battery light on the dash starts to glow around 4k rpm and is fully lit at 5k rpm. from reading other forums, im thinking it maybe the alternator voltage regulator??(please correct me if im wrong). Can the regulators be changed on their own? or is it a new alternator? or am I barking up the wrong tree? voltmeter on the dash is constantly reading between 14v and 15v
  2. or one of those electric superchargers!!! up to 15%+BHP!!!! I think I have one on the back of my pc if ure interested
  3. Oh! Is this one of them can of worms i should have left alone!?!? Lol
  4. oh yeah, forgot to ask...........whats a locostfield???????
  5. I am surprised from this thread how few people (in particular those with aeroscreens) there seem to be who don't wear helmets. I think that wearing safety glasses is a "no brainer" decision, however in my opinion helmets take away some of the enjoyment from driving my RH as well as the vision problems which Florin has commented on. Each to their own I suppose, and I understand people's caution
  6. I agree with snapperpaul. In my opinion your money would be better spent upgrading the front brakes.
  7. Awsome project!!! Would love to do the same to mine one day!!! Have u put a decompression plate on the head because 10.8to 1 is too high for forced induction?
  8. I have an aeroscreen and I only use safety glasses........in fact, the only time I wear a helmet is on track days, and thats because I have to rather than want to!!! I have been hit on the forehead / face with stones etc.....however I still much prefer driving without a helmet, but I would never go out without safety glasses tho!

    Rad Cap

Hi Brian, Glad it's not a head gasket.......that's the last thing you need at this time of year!!! The vents you've mentioned should help massively. Have a look at my photos and you'll see were I located mine which works very well. Without teaching you to suck eggs (plz forgive me), when the car is in motion, you have to both force air into the engine bay (in front of rad) and suck it out (behind the rad). All air flow must travel through the rad to gain most cooling benifit. Forcing air into the engine bay behind the rad doesn't really help with cooling (when the car is in motion) as it creates air pressure behind the rad which hinders the air trying to flow through from the front of the rad. On the plus side......your bonnet scoop looks awsome!!! and will help supply your carbs with fresh air. I have been fortunate enough to be able to do some fluid dynamic analysis on some software we use at work (based on my exmo). This has shown that the RH's nosecone easily provides more than enough air to the rad, but the main restriction is air flowing out of the engine bay (based at 50 mph). Even slightl increase of the air out of the engine bay, such as the louvres you plan to put on can improve cooling massively! I have the same cross memebers blocking the rad on my exmo, and although these are not ideal, they don't cause a great deal of problems if your air flow is okay. At the end of the day, these are not F1 cars!! so it doesn't have to be that complicated..... Just keep in mind that the air flow rate "in" must equal the air flow rate "out" and that the only air movement which significantly benifits engine cooling is that which travels through your rad.

    Rad Cap

I seem to think I have a "suck and blow" (pmsl) rad cap kicking around the garage which would suit your rad and I don't mind sending to you if you want it. It's also rated for water higher pressure than standard caps. Just a few pointers which I have learnt over the years with my exmo; 1) If you fill the cortina rad right to the very top, natural expansion will blow out more coolant than you'd think (it normally leaves about 1.5 inch air gap in the top of the rad). 2) Blown head gasket can result in water being pushed out of your overflow (exhaust gases pressurize your coolant system). 3) When looking into the air flow onto the rad......remember that getting hot air out of the engine bay is just as important as getting cold air into the engine bay (something which is always overlooked). The air flow through your rad will always be restricted by the pressure differential between the "air in" and "air out". On a side note, my over heating problems dissappeared once I put some louvres in the side of my bonnet (near the front of the car) to help expell hot air away from the rad. hth
  11. It looks like a mk1 or mk2 Robin Hood s7. Try this link for more info; http://nw.rhocar.org/identification.htm
  12. just had a major balls up and the worse day ever!!! first day out today as taxed....found a crank seal oil leak. got the car home, taken the engine out of he car and onto the stand...........then the stand + engine fell over when spinning the engine through 180 degrees. KN filters took most of the impact, and they have acted like a shock absorber. carbs have survived thank goodness!!! Problem is the venier pulley has bent on the rim....so anyone in the midlands area got one for sale (pinto) and is about tomorrow for me to collect? help urgently needed!!!

    Road Tax

I've just had my first trip out of the year today.....megajolt has made the engine so smooth and acceleration is awasome!! The tie bars at the front end have made a massive improvement to front end grip.......on the down side tho.....oil leaking from rear crackshaft seal.....doh!!! It's definatley not the sump as it is coming from the bellhousing so tomorrow's rolling road session is cancelled and the days holiday from work will be spend taking the engine out and sorting out the leak!! soooooooooo very *bleep* off!!!!!!!!

got it in one!!! The buttress thing is the what most people moan about (including me) about the exmos. Its also the weak point I was talking about. I'm really jealous! One day I will do the conversion but it wont be for a few years yet! You can tell you've done a gone job on the respray......cracking job matey, I hope we can meet up at a show soon!

hi brian......love the car and you've mad a great job of your dash!!! It is definatly an exmo (I'm 100% sure as I've owned one for the last million years), but its had the wishbone conversion. I've only seen one other exmo with this done because it's a major fabrication job!!! One day, I'd love to do the conversion on mine. If you get chance, or wen u next take the nose cone off, can you send me some photos without the nosecone fitted as this is where most of the work is done during the conversion! Ignore my comments about the strengthening of the struts.....ure don't have them anymore so no problem!!!!

number 1 modification for any exmo owner is to strength the top of your front suspension struts (thick plate / washer) as the tops of them deform over time due to the small surface area that the shock absorber pushes against every time you hit a bump. Eventually they start to crack around the hole which your absorber bolts through!! The stainless steel ones are really bad for it, but the mild steel (like yours and mine) also have this weakness but no as bad. I think this has been covered in quite a few forums, and I think that it's "pinned" on this site under mechanics

oh and your comment about normal life.................now you have a kit car, the tinkering will be never ending!!!! I started my build at 17 and drove it for the first time at 19 (it was already registered as a RH car but it had been completely stripped down by the previous owner and half the bits were missing).............I'm 30 this year and I still wouldn't say the car is "finished"....this winter its had a complete rewire, new headlights, megajolt and suspension tie bar upgrade!!

I'm taxing mine on saturday as well...........first drive of the year on sunday, and then rolling road day on monday.......assuming there is enough fuel to go around!!!! Are you going to the shows this year?

    Nice one Brian.......pics!!! :-)
  21. Most of Derby is out of fuel today......once panic buying starts, it snowballs out of all reason......... The first wave of panic buyers (the brain donors) are the ones which hear about the protests and immediatley go out and purchase fuel. As such they start to empty the odd fuel station hear and there. The second wave of panic buying is the people who hear of the odd "empty" fuel station rush out to fill up. It is the second wave which causes the most damage because the more empty stations people hear about or see, the more they will go out and try to buy fuel!! On a side note.......I'd predicted it was going to be the rain from the 1st April (car tax date + sods law) which was going to stop me going out in the RH, but at this rate....it will be lack of fuel!!!
  22. Had the same problem a few years ago...........found that the clutch cable had slightly melted to the exhaust!! New clutch cable (which is an easy fix) and the problem was gone.
  23. Hey Brian, glad to hear it's all gone well and looking forward to the pics! I had a cd/radio in mine once upon a time, the problems other than the obvious (not being able to hear it very well) was that the CD player would jump a lot due to the bumpy ride (hard suspension). Saying that tho........I did enjoy listening to the radio when parked up at shows etc.....(warm summer days, sat on the grass leaning against the rear wheel, shandy in hand.......) Good luck with the MOT!
  24. Hi Brian........how you getting on with your dash? surely its time for some piccys?
