Diff Identification

wot you want to know for if it just to find out wot ratio you have then you turn prop one full revolution and count how many times wheels go round I think or it could be turn wheel and count prop turns

3 1/2 roughly would be 3.62 and nearly four turns would be 3.92

The information needed to identify a diff is on a thin alloy tag held by one of the rear cover securing bolts. It often breaks off or corrodes away. The number you have posted is the part number of the casting of the case or cover and doesn't tell you about the internals. So to identify either do the turns in and out method or take off the rear cover and you will find have written the ratio on the sun wheel in white paint.

If it is 3.38 it is a good diff for either cruising or higher torque engines.

Not a lot of difference to the 3.62 but just a little.

That's terrific info Mark.

Takes away any doubts and saves valuable time.

Just have to find somewhere to store it now and not forget where it is at the time of need.

Just for completeness - it won't be yours - but there is a "rare" 6.5" diff, it was only available in 3.62:1 ratio I believe. Externally it looks the same as a 7" diff - it mounts the same - although if you measure across the driveshaft flanges it is actually different in width. It has a smaller CWP in it, smaller push-in shafts, and is generally considered weaker.... however the racer boys love it because it's something like a kilo or two lighter than the 7".

So just be aware - I put it here for reference really, in case anyone is buying a 3.62 diff, you might want to check/verify whether it's a 7" or 6.5".

Will be checking my old diff tonight. It's a 3.62 but it's got the smaller 23 spline shafts not the 26 spline ones. No doubt if I confirm it's 6.5", it will coincide with a global crash in the value of 6.5" diffs on the open market.
