Tdc on crank

Piston 1 at top checked through plug hole

Cam at tdc

So that is correct isnt it

There are three parts to this timing operation done in the order below. One for the crank. One for the cam. One for the dizzy. You have one incomplete bit, one correct and one bit missing.

1. Piston 1 at top dead centre at the end of a compression stroke. (50/50 chance It could have been at TDC after an exhaust stroke.)

2. Cam marks aligned for cam at TDC.

3. Dizzy inserted so the rotor arm is at 4o'clock and the mark on the dizzy rim is aligned with the centre of the rotor arm by rotating the body of the dizzy. (This is as viewed from standing behind the left front wheel which you would be when inserting the dizzy. 12oclock would be the bit of dizzy rim closest to the block.) Number one spark plug lead goes in the dizzy cap at 4 oclock.

For Number one piston:- The squish (1) is timed. The valves are both closed and timed. The spark is timed and sent to the right plug.

This should be good enough to start the engine. The dizzy fixing bolt is just nipped up to allow you to turn the dizzy 10 degrees forward or back when trying to start the engine.

The ignition timing will need a tweek to get it spot on once running but do this with a strobe with the engine running.

No step or part of a step can be missed out.

You will need a fully charged battery.

You should have a strobe light.

You should have fresh petrol.

Each item should look like the pics below.

That should do it and avoid the 180 degree out scenario.

Remove all plugs. Wind the crank with a spanner to TDC at the end of the compression stroke of no 1 piston. Examine cam pulley position. Is the pointer or dot at the six oclock position? Only if it isn't, might you want to remove the belt to re-time the cam. Then refit and tension the belt. Then remove and refit the dizzy in its correct position. Remember the rotor shaft of the dizzy turns about 30 degrees as you fit it. Then line up the dizzy body with the rotor arm and pinch up the dizzy bolt. Refit the plugs and leads in correct order, 1,3,4,2 clockwise, 1 going to the newly timed up position that the rotor arm is pointing to.

Get it running first on the standard carb. Pay attention to that ignition, when its working properly thats the time to change carbs. If its not right you can always put on original carb. Nothing lost. Swap components systematicaly and you will find fault finding easier.

Well got up to temp and guess what blue smoke on overun

Maybe time for 2.1 full rebuild or zetec

Shame as sounds lovely also tested compression on pot 1 was only 70-75 psi

Going to try head off marcus to make sure failing that

Anyone got a good pinto for sale need to make stoneleigh

Blue smoke on over run just lets those following you are still ahead. Thicker oil or try some "Snake Oil" --- still waiting to see if the additive I used in Florin is doing any good --- it has improved the oil pressure but not sure on blue smoke which others following suffered.

Up side is oil changes are automatic.
