Not sure whether you have one over your way Phil, but there is a drive to set up 50 Fab Labs across the country with free access to all sorts of fancy gear that may be beyond the scope of joe public. Might be of interest if you're after doing just a one off piece

There's one just down the road from me, been in a couple of times - lots of nice kit. They've done a couple of prototypes for me. A great facility with some good incentives for small business and public alike.

After much research I bought a delta printer kit physically building it was easy took about 4 hour. configuring and calibrating was another thing. not having done a great deal of electronics was not such an issue, it was more the getting my head round arduino and how to upload the firmware. Still picked up all the bits for the printer on wednesday and got it to print tonight, easyer than building a hood
