looking at building a 3d printer has anyone else done it or like me looking at it?

I have been looking at the delta (tripod) type.

We've looked into it at work and have decided to wait 12months or so because the prices of them are just starting to fall so in a years time we should be able to get a much better one for the same money.

We use one for work to make prototypes. Bloody clever. Now looking at 3D metal printing....

I teach, demo 3D CAD software (PDMS) I would be interested in trying to get a model out of my software. What file format do they require?

.stl format normally.

Not sure whether you have one over your way Phil, but there is a drive to set up 50 Fab Labs across the country with free access to all sorts of fancy gear that may be beyond the scope of joe public. Might be of interest if you're after doing just a one off piece

There's one just down the road from me, been in a couple of times - lots of nice kit. They've done a couple of prototypes for me. A great facility with some good incentives for small business and public alike.

After much research I bought a delta printer kit physically building it was easy took about 4 hour. configuring and calibrating was another thing. not having done a great deal of electronics was not such an issue, it was more the getting my head round arduino and how to upload the firmware. Still picked up all the bits for the printer on wednesday and got it to print tonight, easyer than building a hood

What did you print and how long did it take? Pictures please.

Heres a pic of it printing a snowflake with it being xmas time took about 30 mins to print it, size 90mm x 90mm x 3mm

So when the airports shut, trains don't run and you can't get anywhere by road because the snow has fallen, we'll know your printer has gone berserk Phil and it'll all be your fault.
