congratulations!

i don't think there's anything wrong with having the vent hole open - its there to let excessive pressure escape and is a standard fitment. A better question is why is anything trying to escape? Have you checked the charging voltage? Too many volts causes gassing off. Could also be a dead cell but would be surprised on a new battery. All that said, i do only remember vent holes on the side of my last battery - have you got a battery designed for fitment 90° around from its current position?

Thanks Nick, Thomas has been ill for a week or so with a virus, double ear and double eye infections, so i don't know which way is up at the moment! Might make it tonight but probably not.

i buy cheap screenwash concentrate which wont have much alcohol in but is fine for cleaning the screen. In winter i add 10% methanol to the diluted volume, which is fine for -7°C, probably lower. IPA works too, but needs to be 20% by volume

if it has been driven on the road with the original sierra plate, there's something fundamentally wrong. They have avoided IVA and the car is not legally registered. Any insurance would also be invalid, and the police (along with most people) would take a very dim view. Why avoid IVA? if the car was well built it would pass IVA with minimal work and would then be legal. I would avoid this car, unless you're paying under 2k and fancy a challenge, and don't mind being told untruths.

are you sure it is overheating? with the new engine you'll have a different temperature sender, which is unlikely to be the same resistance as the old engine's.

what mercedes diff are you using and does it fit in the sierra subframe?

It's looks very similar to a later model sliding pillar 2b with the STS / RS Jigtec front wishbone conversion. I had this (before it was reshaped by a new driver) and had problems with the top ball joint exceeding the limit of travel on compression of the suspension and at limits of steering, leading to wear and stiffness in the joint, and ride harshness. Nothing critical, but worth keeping an eye out. Congrats on nearing the completion of your build, it looks stunning Andy

I'd say a like-for-like replacement with an unused chassis of the same spec, he wont need an IVA.

if it has jumped a tooth, there must be a reason why - ie slack in the system from a failed / worn tensioner or guide, or from a worn chain. I'd try and find the cause of the problem if you can.
