Guys,

I dropped in to see Jim last weekend. Since then his engine is out and is being rebuilt by a local Cosworth Specialist and not myself.

As far as I'm aware its there and being rebuilt and should be ready soon.

Hopefully a quick turn around and Jim should be back in the game anytime soon and enjoying some summer motoring with his son.

Paul

I have to agree I don't see the point of building a race tuned pinto engine to sell on... You will sell it for less than half you spend on it. Things like high pressure oil pumps cost a fortune....

Pinto high pressure oil pump £48

Pinto high pressure high capacity oil pump £68

Not expensive IMHO

Yes building a proper full race Pinto is expensive

Building a high power 2.1 my cosy rod, V6 piston RL31 cam big valve cost 2k

I built up a 2.1 with FR32 for around 1k

Here at last some piccies of my sad engine, apparently all 4 bigends had turned, and scored the crank and the bores picked up. result one scrap block!

That is exactly why the reason for shells turning should be traced.

To late for that one now but something was not checked correctly on that build.

Jimmy. The ancills you have on that engine will fit any 1800 or 2 ltr engine.

That means no need to be worried about getting a fully assembled engine.

Firstly was it an engineering shop that recommended scrapping the block.

If not the bores look like they might just hone the scrapes out.

I say this as on the one shown, the old honing marks can still be followed through the scratches.

This is only a photo though.

If it is scrap, it might be worth getting someone to look over any second hand engine before you buy.

Not to much work as you can drop the sump and look at things like under size shells, if original what condition are they and the crankshaft in.

If the crank has been machined it is most likely the cylinders bores have been rebored. Nowt wrong we that if they are unmarked.

After all you don't want another engine failure after all the work and expense you are going through.

If your head is still in good condition, try pricing a read machined short motor with a good warranty on it.

Or ask if they can fit your head.

The guy who stripped and inspected my engine rebuilds cossie engines so no doubting his expertise, I was just hoping my engine could be repaired.he is looking out or an engine for me too. plenty around if I want to pay over the odds for one, but I am skint so I need an economical solution. would take a 1.6 pinto just to get the car on the road again.

it has already been bored out to 2.1 so cant take anymore off. the conrods have been ovalled where the big end shell sits.

Hot news!! replacement engine purchased, not heard running but they promised its a good 'un!! 14 day g'tee, I have this week off so will be fitting it hopefully. Got the cambelt/thermostat housing and waterpump off today, Gonna spend some time cleaning it up, got new parts ordered including full engine set of gaskets. got to swap sumps over and take a close look at the oil pick up pipe, on my old engine it didn't look modded it seemed to sit on the bottom of the sump?? hopefully by the weekend all assembled and back in the 2B. just in time to go on our annual holiday, that is me, the wife, the dogs and the estate car!! will have to leave the 2B in the garage at home for a fortnight!! sad times!!

That sounds like the oil pick up pipe could well be your main culprit.

I'm sure there should be a couple of centimetre gap between pipe and base of sump.

Hope it all goes well on the rebuild.

I was told about 8mm, had a similar problem with a shortened sump where the sheet steel had bowed inwards making it touch the pickup

I found out by putting blue tack on the pickup edges and dummy fitting the sump, a ballpien hammer sorted the problem

Make sure the pipe is fitted correctly with no leaks.

It is a suction pipe so any leaks on any bends or joints it will draw air instead of oil.
