    Mot Or Not To Mot

My view is that having spent £450 on an IVA, I'm not paying another £40 odd 12 months and 1500 miles later just so I can pay another £220 road tax. I probably do more regular checking in those 12 months than they'll ever do in a 20 minute MOT.

    Mot Or Not To Mot

It depends on who you ask (assuming you could actually talk to the DVLA or VOSA on the phone). Your only problem will be taxing the car online without an MOT, but there's a work around here: http://www.rhocar.org/index.php?showtopic=32201&&do=findComment&comment=252020 This is what I've done the last 2 times. The 3 year anniversary of my IVA will be this October so I'll need an MOT before then but as my current tax expires in April, I'll probably MOT in March and then tax online when the reminder is sent out.
  4. I'd be concerned about the strength of the flywheel after having two thirds of the weight taken out of it. He'll be looking for a new pair of legs if that lets go.
  5. 2.0 Pinto engine complete - £100 probably if it's a complete runner with no history of a rebuild. Bike carbs and manifold - £150 max Exhaust - next to nothing assuming it's a standard cast manifold. One question though - why the swap from bike carbs to webers given that the bike carbs generally offer better driveability. Personally I'd be sticking the bike carbs on the new engine and flogging all the old stuff off to the retro Ford boys.

    Older Kits

The mere fact that there are Part built kits for sale should tell you something - many people who start building kits don't ever finish and a proportion of those will be because they underestimated the amount of work involved. As other have said, most of the common failure points of any model are now widely recognised and are generally easy enough to include in your build if they're done at the correct time. Having build my 2B from a part built kit, my opinion now is that unless you've got a burning desire to build a kit from scratch, buy sometinhg that's already correctly registered and then tinker with that. If you're dead set on your own build, remember the following: A 90% complete part built is probably only really 40% built and could well need the same spending on it again to finish it. Decent complete single donor Sierras are getting thin on the ground and expensive if you want to go the single donor, age related plate route. Avoid the RH lightweight if you happen to see one, whilst they can be got through IVA, they're probably not the best thing for a first time builder.
  7. If they fell into the wrong hands....... link
  8. Yes, that picture shows the casting numbers. The engine number will be stamped into the raised rectangular pad directly above them. you'll probably need to get some emery on it to clean the paint off back to bare metal before you can read the number.
  9. Look very nice - but it's still only got half an engine!!!!
  10. Correct - the part number is 2A239EVA http://www.rimmerbro...tem--i-2A239EVA Thread size is 5/16" UNF
  11. ... or just top up the oil in the box and leave a newspaper under the car when you park it in the garage.
  12. Due to over-running refurbishments, the Malt Shovel will be CLOSED this coming Wednesday 27th November. Therefore for this month only, we will be meeting at The Bulls Head, Meriden CV7 7NN from 7 o'clock onwards. This is a few minutes drive from our usual venue: http://www.thebullsheadmeriden.co.uk/ https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=CV7+7NN&hl=en&ll=52.436091,-1.642874&spn=0.001923,0.010772&sll=52.505221,-1.81541&sspn=0.245756,1.378784&oq=cv7+7nn&hnear=CV7+7NN,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=17 Thanks to Thrashed for pointing out that the Malt Shovel would be closed. Gaz will contact most of our regulars directly, please pass the info on if you think anyone else needs to know.
  13. I've just gone from Vodafone monthly contract to Virgin pay monthly SIM only. I didn't want a new phone and was sick of Vodafone's poor customer service and network coverage. (and they put up my contract price part way through grrr). Virgin might not be any better but at least I'm not tied in to a long contract now so if I get sick of them I can give them the immediate elbow.
  14. Those bolt heads with an integral washed are a nightmare because the head is shallow and the flats always have some taper on them so they strip easily. Looking at where it is, I'd smack the end of the bolt a good few times with a hammer to shock it loose, hacksaw a slot in the head down as far as the washer part and then get it out with a decent flat bladed screwdriver.
  15. Dan, good result on the bellhousing - it looks unused?
  16. Nice angle drill, I wish my neighbour had one

    Iva Pass

Well done, a first time pass is a huge achievement. Excellent write up too, this will be useful reading for anyone who's not sure exactly what the IVA test involves, thanks for taking the trouble to write it all down.
  18. Not forgetting you'll qualify for 10% club member's discount!!!
  19. Basically you just need the dizzy and the matching ignition module. The wiring info is here: http://nw.rhocar.org/ESC1.htm or http://nw.rhocar.org/inductive_ign.htm depending on which system you use.
  20. A pleasure to be there - will always travel for free food!
  21. .stl format normally.
  22. Either whoever registered it at DVLA doesn't understand the system or your son in law made sure that the summary was worded to suit his registration requirements. Either way, with the modifications stated, it's a radical alteration and should have a BIVA test. Should also go on a Q plate because there's not enough parts of the original vehicle to qualify for the original reg under the points system. Beach buggys and older builds might circumvent the test if there's "substantial evidence" to demonstrate that they were constructed prior to 1998. http://www.the-ace.o...-biva/#more-751

  24. I think you might be struggling now - this is an old thread and kirkycom hasn't been on the forum since Nov 2010
