2ltr pinto efi misfire and loss of power when hot

hi guys

I have a problem with my 2ltr pinto efi. It runs, starts and drives as it should when cold, but as soon as it gets a little temperature in it it looses power and pops fire  down the exhaust. Ive swoped all the usual culprits ie plugs, leads , distributar cap, rotar arm, fuel filter, checked timing changed fuel (as it stood for many years) have i missed something silly. As i drive it out the garage its on full power, turn it around and almost have to push it back in. could it posibly a coil breaking doown. has anyone experienced the same problem, any advise welcome.

My first thought was coil. Had it on a tractor once, an old ferguson. It took me a while to realise that the miss fire was less noticeable when the tractor was turned so that the wind was blowing on it! It would be worth trying a different one to rule it out.

Mine was a coil issue breaking down when Hot, had new coil fitted runs like dream now.

Tappet gaps to small?

Valves warm up and get longer and no longer close properly.

Worth checking but a long shot.

On a pinto EFi there's a valve type thing (can't remember its name) on the inlet plenum. When left it can start to stick and give symptoms similar to yours, it needs removing and cleaning with carb cleaner.

Worth a try as it's an easy fix (It's held on with 2 nuts/bolts and has a wiring plug connected to it)

Thanks. Have looked at this it seems to be opening when the cars running which I believe it should. But the symptoms still there. Will take it off anyway and clean thanks for the advice.

Quick test for coolant sensor, onnce the engine is warm and showing the symptoms described, unplug the sensor and short the pins of the connector with something like a 2kohm resistor, that will emulate the signal from the sensor when the engine is hot.

I doubt it’s coolant temp but worth checking if only to eliminate but popping and banging in exhaust is generally unburnt fuel in exhaust. 
Coolant would cause rich running but not unburnt so start on ign side of things.  Plugs coil etc. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s as car warms it could just be something breaking down after a few mins of running not changing as coolant warms

In my experience Pinto EFI ECU adds a LOT of fuel when it thinks the engine is cold, enough to cause incomplete combustion, loss of power, and unburnt fuel i the exhaust.  It could also cause fouling of the plugs which make the whole thing worse.

I had a issue on my pinto efi, kept getting high tick over changed everything checked everything. It was the coolant temp sensor. Probably the cheapest part to change, but I had to buy long 25mm socket to get it out.

      It might be a long shot but I am after a manifold for my Robin Hood which has a 2.0l Pinto.  At the moment I have an original Sierra manifold but I would prefer one of the Robin Hood Engineering ones.  Has anyone got one that they don't want anymore?

      The 1600 pinto in the zero has been replaced with a 2L with zx6r bike carbs. The engine has been honed out with new rings and we have very good compression across all cylenders.
       
      The issue is that number 1 is not firing and number 3 is intermittant. and we cant workout why. When we spray carb cleaner into number 1 if fires??
       
       
      what we have done so far.
       
      changed the leads
      changed the plugs
      check we have good spark by earthing leads and turning over
      drilled out jets on carbs
      swapped internals of number 1 carb to number 4 to see if problem moves (it doesnt) (though jet may be blocked)
      increased fuel pressure
      changed dizzy cap
      changed amp
      changed coil
      checked air flow across carbs are same.
       
       
      we are fresh out of idea's now, can anyone provide any advise?

      The time has come to sell our Robin Hood 2B (wishbones).
       
      It will be a sad day when Frankie no longer lives in our garage but the reality is that we have had time for a very few days out over the past two years and we feel that the car deserves to be out and about more.
       
      The car has been built to a very high standard with MK cycle wings on the front wheels and Westfield seats. The front shocks are AVO and the rears are GAZ, all are adjustable. The car is fitted with a 2.1L Pinto engine rebuilt by Vulcan Engineering to the 160BHP spec. Fuelling is provided by twin 40 Webber carbs with K&N filters whilst electronic ignition keeps the sparks coming. The loom has been partially replaced by a Premier loom and has never caused any faults.
      The car is kept garaged and it has rarely seen rain but does come complete with full wet weather gear. More normally the car is seen out and about with a cream coloured Surry top that keeps out much of the wind and stops me from getting sunburn on top of my head. In addition, the car has a cover from Cover Systems that can be used if the car is to be left parked for any length of time – such as outside a hotel overnight.
       
      The car is fitted with a tow bar and comes complete with a camping trailer by Suncamp.
       
      The car will be taxed and given a new MOT A.S.A.P.
       
      price £5000.
