  1. Basic science. Red paint absorbs yellow through blue light and reflects the red only. Red light has the least energy and blue the most energy, beyond blue is ultra violet, X rays then gamma rays with more and more energy. The energy from the absorbed blue light has to go somewhere, it mostly becomes heat but some breaks chemical bonds in the pigment which shows as fading. So blue paint reflects the energetic light and is fade resistant. Most red pigments fade in sunlight UV blocking polishes help but are not perfect.

Just been checking. F18 off latest US carrier is 0 to 180 in 3 seconds. Way to go

Is the tacho for an 8 cyclider motor? I can not quite read the writing on the face.

if you want a sub 4 sec 0-60 time I suggest tou try a winch launch of a glider with an enthusastic winch driver. 2 sec is possible with 20 sec to 1000 feet up, even better is a cat launch from a carrier but harder to arrange.

+ve side of coil switches up and down for every spark. -ve side is earth and does not therefore have any signal for the tacho.

Yes the third wire is an earth. Test is does it work when engine is running.
  7. Tappet gaps to small? Valves warm up and get longer and no longer close properly. Worth checking but a long shot.
  8. That makes me think. I have always hankered after a stanley steam car, not every day transport but fun to leave a trail of steam obscuring the road behind you.
  9. Not powder coating I know but a lot of space frame failures are due to rusting from the inside. Water gets in and the rust starts and does not show until it is all the way through.
  10. Seat belts are not normally repairable as they are a safty fitting.
  11. Just normal countersunk head posidrive screws. Sorry no close up pics right now
  12. As per the instructions I used 3 self tapping screws per side. I drilled a 1.5mm pilot hole in the frame with a stop on the drill bit to prevent the drill hitting the glass. I checked that the screws were long enough the properly enguage the aluminium frame without touching the glass and ground the tips of the screws off as the length was almost long enough to touch. Been on since 1997 and 70,000 miles without any problems.
  13. on my exmo I could get to the gearbox level/filler plug from the engine bay. I had to use a funel and a couple feet of tube to fill.
  14. Type 9 gearbox has a plug in the left hand side which doubles as a fill port and level port. There is no oil drain as standard but on rebuild one is sometimes added.
  15. When the starter is slugish imediatly check each connection to find if any are warm/hot or if the starter itself is hot. Do not forget to check the pull in solonoid on the starter as this has switch contacts in it and might be hot. Hot connections are bad connections. It can also be worn brushes in the starter
  16. What do you call a blind deer No idea What do you call a legless blind deer Still no idea The next line is rude. So not to be rude where is the pic?
  17. OK I give up, Please tell me what these are Thanks Ian
  18. Sierra drum brakes require the movement of the hand brake to rachet up the adjuster. If the drums just slid off then the handbrake was not working properly. The lever that the cable attaches to should pivot freely on the pusher bar between the shoes, check this first. Then the rachet needs the stainless steel pawl to click it to rachet the adjuster sometimes these are bent. I have an early haynes manual to the very first sierras which still gave a fair bit of info rather than the new ones which just tell you to get a service exchange everything. I can scan the rear brake bits if this helps. Ian

    Winter Tips

I am guessing that you are intending to store for the winter rather than drive through the winter. Battery on a maintenance charger that is designed for this rather than the old trickle charger. Check that there is anti freeze in the cooling water or drain the cooling system. Check tyre pressure and add a couple of psi. Chock wheels and leave hand brake off to prevent sticking. Lock the clutch in released position to prevent clutch sticking. Thats it for me.
  20. long time since I have been to a meet. If it is at the george and dragon I will try to be there in my exmo
  21. On some of the smiths instruments the ilumination bulb provided to earth. 2 wires to the bulb with the earth being permenantly connected and the ilumination supply coming from the side light feed. When the bulb is plugged in the bulb holder provided an earth connection.
  22. Bad connections in the base??
  23. I would be suprised if ford did not design for 1in3 hills. The angle of a suspended tow will be less than this wnd there will be no power going through the box when being towed unlike going up a steep hill.
  24. If you look at the shiny metal uncovered by moving the ball upwards plus the thickness of the C clip then you have at least 7mm.
