Hi, My name is John Dickens and I'm the Technical Editor of Complete Kitcar Magazine. Along with Ian Stent the editor I am putting together a book to replace the older Monty Watkins 'How To Build A Kitcar' edition. As part of the rewrite there will be a section on the more modern donor cars in use currently so I am looking for information and advice from actual builders. The donors I am particularly interested in are the Mazda MX5; BMW 3 Series; Ford Sierra. I would appreciate any advice on choosing a particular model, engine spec, braking system or whatever and also any points to check before purchase, known faults or weak areas. Thank…

Hi Folks Im after a bit of advice. I have been offered a 1990 Sierra with a 2.0 DOHC lump in it - low mileage and fsh. Is this a good donor for a Zero as I was hoping to use a pinto lump due to the size of engine bay in the Zero. Will this unit slot in with out to much trouble as dont fancy an extra widening of the chassis etc. Any advice form you folks would be appreciated. If anyone is interested the above vehicle is now for sale ..please mention this link if enquiring as the owner would like it to go to good use. My link

Hi everyone, Very much a newbie to the site and to the whole world of Kit Cars. BUt im looking hard at a zero and here in Australia ( Melbourne) the main engines used in Clubman cars are Toyota's Honda's and Mazda's Im wondering if any one has used a Mazda MX5 NA model as a donor car - Engine - Gearbox and ECU in a Zero? This is the 1.6 lt engine not the turbo 1.8 of the NB or the Duratec of the NC. where there any problems you found? any major modifcations needed to be made? cutting of hood etc? Are the engines easy to mount? eg are pre fabricated engine mounts through GBS? If there are any fellow Victorians on the site and have completed a …

Hi all, The time has come to get rid of the donor sierra now that we have stripped it of what we need. We have got in touch with someone who can get rid of it for us and pay us £75 for the privilege... which is fine. My question is how does it work when comgin to get an age related plate? My understanding is when someone comes to scrap your car they take the V5 and send it off to the DVLA to say its been scrapped, but to get an age related plate you need the car registration document (which i presume is the v5). So do I let them take the car and not hand the V5 document to the scrap company or is there something else I need to do before scrapping the donor…

Has anyone else seen the article in the October edition of Kitcar magazine about Tim Barnett who bought a lightweight kit. He bought a Sierra XR4i for £50 as the donor and it took him 2 years to build. When built but not SVA'd he got an offer of a free track day at Donnington, very unlucky but the car caught fire whilst on the track and even worse, Tim inhaled fumes and got pneumonia. Anyway this guy was not deterred and he bought a Zero from GBS, transferred the parts from the burnt out shell, engine gearbox etc and completed the Zero, had it SVA'd and now is a proud owner of a very nice looking Zero on an 09 plate. Now having set the scene, my question, how on earth…

I could do with a bit of help on what you need to look for when selecting a donor. Does any sort of sierra do or is it a specific type you need? I've seen this one http://autotrader.mobi/used-cars/advert/201032365493426/viewing-1?PHPSESSID=lg36vpuha6inlga1jclmccq311 Don't know if the link will work. It's a 2.0L ghia. Tips would be appreciated

Hi Guys and Gals Can anyone give me some pointers. Has anyone ever fitted a Honda engine/gearbox to a Zero - I heard somewhere someone's used an S2000 engine?. As im thinking of building one, and can get hold of Honda components easier than I can Ford ones. Any links or advice appreciated as just checking what can/can't be done easily before I take the plunge. Cheers
