Engine

Won't fire, won't even turn? Not running smooth? Cutting out? Ask here!

  1. Hi all, is there a replacement for the vehicle speed sensor that would be in the Ford gearbox?, or a way of utilising it in a RX8 box? I ask as I’ve replaced a auto box with a Mazda manual gearbox in my kit car which doesn’t have one, and have read various thoughts as to wether it’s needed or not, apparently Mazda use the wheel sensors, I have the ECU and loom for the EEC IV system and have all the other sensors fitted thanks in advance Ken

Could somebody kindly furnish me with the part number or numbers of available and suitable oil filters for this engine please. I thought getting one today was going to be easy when I saw that the one fitted was a halfords item. However this has been discontinued and the staff were as expected less than helpful. No wonder nobody else bothers to open on a sunday, halfords are not exactly going to take much trade away. Hopefully if I get a number I can get to a proper shop tomorrow.

Hello again, for about the third time ! Every time I post on here, I get lots of helpfull advice, (I buy a lot of stuff on Ebay, so not really used to this sort of response !), anyway, although fairly handy with a spanner, I'm not an expert by any means, and just wondered if anyone on here knows of someone who is kit car orientated, and happy to have a look/take on work at reasonable money ? Downside is, - I'm in Scotland ! (Does everybody know where that is ?) I would be disappointed if someone said Arnold Clark ! Thanks,

Not only can I not find my Megajolt computer cable but my Laptop doesn't have a Serial Port any more. Does anyone have the relevant USB Cable they can lend me or a link to where I can purchase one as I'm unsure which one to use there seem to be many different types of RJ11 to USB connectors??? Better still, is anyone local to Guildford with a Zetec Megajolt map on a Laptop that can pop over and plug it in? Cheers.

Hello Is it possible to use the CVH top hat valve stem seals on the OHC head? I have just tried but the seals seem too small. The internal diameter of the seal is 14.5mm but the outside diameter on the seat is about 16.5mm. I thought this was used as an upgrade but maybe I got it wrong. Thanks Graeme

Hi Not been around for a bit but looking on getting my 2B on a good rolling Road. Did we once have a register on here or am I dreaming again (age, I know). If not, can anyone offer recommendations for a local facility to Surrey. Need someone that can Jet ZX9 bike Carbs to a 2.0 Zetec Silvertop and Trigger Wheels electronic ignition. It is running but like a dog and only pulling about 40mph. Thanks

Hi all, I would like to replace my current exhaust as the manifold is very rusted and I think the silencer sounds like it has a hole in it. However I am torn between buying off the shelf such as http://www.kitcardirect.co.uk/ford-pinto-2-stainless-steel-4-to-1-exhaust-manifold-mk-indy-and-7-replica.html and https://www.kitspares.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=43_24&product_id=854&car=43 as I would like a cat with the silencer. Or take it somewhere to get a new custom version, although I have heard a few horror stories of people who dont know what they are doing. I had thought on splashing out and getting simpsons exhaust to build …

Hello all My first post so please forgive me if this has been discussed before, I'm looking for some help with my new build,I've just finished a year long restoration of my s7, it passed it's mot for the first time in over 10 years. I'm running a duratec on standard injectors and a microsquirt ecu, but I'm struggling to find a standard ignition timing map, is anyone on here running a duratec, I'm keen to see an advance table for a standard set up. I'm experiencing some hesitation when cruising and I'd like to eliminate ignition advance as being the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Andy

Hey all pinto masterminds, can someone please help me with how I can troubleshoot why she won't run. I have checked the following: 1. Fuel is getting to the carbs 2. The points and plug leads are on correctly and can see the spark. 3. Tried to make sure the carbs were clear with some carb cleaner and manually checked the jets. 4. Ran some easy start into the carbs, but wasn't happy with blowback it seems to create. I have an engine builder that helped me get the heads, cam and webers setup a year or so ago. But he doesn't do house calls to help. Can take a call if someone is available to help. Dale 20210405_162538.mp4

Eurgh. What an annoying day! I developed an intermittent misfire on my Zetec blacktop early last week. Literally seemed to miss for a second whilst cruising. Then fine for a minute or so, then a second of mis again. Rather than mess on I replaced the coil pack, leads and plugs. Difficult to tell if it resolved it but took the car for a drive and it seemed to be fine. Great. Driving along tonight at 60mph it starts missing and losing power, pull over and limp home. Gradually it lost more and more power (but no change in note) then it finally gave up and is constantly missing - it sounded like a motor bike. Had to get towed home Where would you guy…

I am very close to plumbing in the rad and filling with coolant ready for engine starting, but I am unsure whether I should take this opportunity to install a header tank. Do you think I need one? My rad has been mounted at an angle in front of the chassis, pic below. I don't have a heater and don't plan on fitting one. Has anyone had issues with engine cooling with the exmo?

I'm putting a zetec blacktop into my hood at some point soon. I have a mounting kit as per here https://www.kitspares.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=883&search=zetec+mount One of the mounts matches up well, but the other side doesn't appear to have the right formation of holes anywhere. Does anyone happen to have any photos or descriptions where these type of mounts bolt to the engine?

Hi Guys and gals, I,m building a 2B and have a pinto and type 9 set up but looking at something more up to date, I have been offered a mx5 engine and box has anyone fitted a mx5 in a 2b do they fit and how easy is it fit. How does it affect the IVA I was trying to go for my Sierra donor car reg, do I just change the engine no. for the MX5 no.

As my engine and gearbox are out at the moment, I've been looking for any other jobs to do. I decided to buy a new clutch kit, but I was faced with a choice of which engine type. Mine is N4A, as it's the 2.0 EFi, but the closest I was offered by the auto factor was N4B, which is the lower powered one with a catalyst. Now I'm unsure whether the clutch I already had one was the correct one anyway! And which one to buy now. Looking at my pic of the original donor clutch, which I binned, the central spring "fingers" are quite short, like the one here - https://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/car-parts/Ford/Sierra/2.0L/Petrol/National-Auto-Parts/Transmission/Clutch-Kits-…

Hi, I used a cork gasket on my Pinto sump, but wasn't happy with it as I thought it was a bit leaky. Hard to be certain, though, as I think I had other leaks above it! Anyway, as my engine is out at the moment for a different reason, I thought I'd take the opportunity to buy a "competition" sump gasket from Burton and give that a try instead - https://www.burtonpower.com/sump-gasket-set-heavy-duty-ford-sohc-pinto-ft793kc.html. Apparently, if there is a leak, oil makes the gasket material swell at that point and should stop the leak. Thing is, now I've fitted it, it seems quite thin and I can see a wave along the joint, particularly in one place. I ran a fe…

Hi all. I was a bit bored so decided to map my advance curve. More out of curiosity than trying to sort any issues as the car goes pretty well for a 1.6 I think. Anyway, vacuum removed, my idle advance is 9 degs. Above that it tends to pink. 1500 revs already at 25 degs. Gets to 28 by 3500 then no change at higher revs. Does this sound too steep or am I being fussy? I think max should be more like 34 degs? Maybe some fun with springs coming up. Any thoughts? David
